Dental Restoration Options

Tooth restorations are defined as the various ways The Oyster Bay Family Dentists can replace missing teeth or repair missing parts of the tooth. At our practice, the goal of our staff is to improve self-esteem in patients as well as oral health. If you have missing teeth because of tooth decay, gingivitis or injury to the mouth, then a dental restoration may be an option for you.

These days, thanks to a variety of options for dental restoration, patients have many choices for repairing worn, decayed, damaged or missing teeth. Tooth structure can be missing due to deterioration of a previously placed restoration, or fracture of a tooth. Depending on the severity of the patient’s case, at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, a specialist will choose from a variety of filling options based on the type and location of the filling. Examples of dental restorations include fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a great solution for patients that are looking to literally “bridge the gap” created by one or more missing teeth. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists use dental bridges to restore smiles, improve talking and chewing ability, and in some cases help improve patient speech. Missing teeth can make it more difficult for patients to produce certain sounds when speaking, and the replacement of those missing teeth can help the patient form those sounds more effectively.

The process of creating a bridge begins by reshaping the anchor teeth (abutments) to which the bridge will be attached. After the anchor teeth are prepared, an impression of the teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab. The lab is able to use the impression to create a model of the teeth as they appear in the patient's mouth. Then a bridge is custom-made to properly fit and feel as close to natural teeth as possible. The bridge consists of crowns that cover the anchor teeth and a pontic (or pontics), which look like and act as the replacement tooth or teeth.

Crowns

In some cases, a decayed or fractured tooth may require more than a filling to restore its function and appearance. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we are happy to offer patients options in repairing damaged teeth, such as crowns.

A dental crown involves a few steps. The process starts by removing the bacteria and tooth decay. In some instances, a root canal may be performed if decay is extensive. The tooth is then prepared for the crown by filing it down in order for the crown to fit. Next, an impression of the tooth is taken. A temporary crown is placed, while the permanent crown is being made in a dental lab.

Crowns are a great choice for restoring a damaged tooth for several reasons. For example, crowns are usually made of porcelain, metal or ceramic and function just like a natural tooth. The color of the crown is matched to your other teeth, so it also is indistinguishable from other teeth. A dental crown is often very durable and with proper oral hygiene can last for fifteen years or longer.

At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we offer a range of restorative services. In addition to crowns, we also provide bridges, inlays/onlays and bonding. Our staff is committed to providing you with exceptional service in a state of the art facility.

Bridges

Bridges
Broken or missing teeth can occur for a variety of reasons. For example, trauma to the mouth can fracture a tooth or knock it out completely. In addition, gum disease can cause tooth decay and possibly lead to tooth loss. The good news is at Oyster Bay Family Dentists we offer restorative services including dental bridges.

A bridge fills in the gap where the missing tooth was. It may be supported by dental implants or natural teeth. A conventional bridge includes two crowns on both sides of the gap. The bridge is attached to the crowns, which act as an anchor and hold the bridge in place.

Usually two appointments are needed in order to have a traditional dental bridge placed. The process of getting a bridge will involve preparing the adjacent teeth for the crowns. Preparation involves removing any decay and shaping and filing the teeth. An impression of the teeth is taken so the bridge can be made. While you wait for your permanent bridge to be made, a temporary one will be placed.

Bridges are made from durable materials, such as porcelain, gold or alloy. In some cases, a combination of materials will be used. Proper maintenance of a bridge is essential in order to prevent cavities from developing underneath. Regular brushing, flossing and professional cleanings are needed.
