Partial Crowns: Inlays and Onlays

If you have decayed or broken teeth, don’t wait any longer to schedule an appointment with the Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Although we provide general dental services, our speciality is prosthodontics, the placement of prosthetic teeth. Sometimes, a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a simple filling, but when large parts of it are still intact, we may give it a partial crown.

Partial crowns are usually placed on molars or premolars, the wide teeth in back. These teeth grind food and have deep indentations in between their pointy bits, called cusps. It is easy for food debris to get trapped in the indentations, where it would become infected and decay. The acid produced by oral bacteria would damage the enamel, causing the patient pain, and if it continues, the infection may reach the pulp chamber. The cusps surrounding the indentation may also be damaged, whether through decay or being broken off in an accident.

When a patient is suffering from tooth decay, we’ll remove the damaged enamel after numbing them with a local anesthetic. Once the infected material has been removed, we can take an impression of the patient’s mouth that will be used to mill the partial crown. A partial crown that nestles into the indentation is called an inlay, while a partial crown that substitutes for cusps is called an onlay. The custom-fitted partial crown is cemented onto the tooth, allowing the patient to eat normally again. It will need to be cared for through regular brushing and flossing, but can last for over a decade.

Dry Mouth

Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda of The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, located in Oyster Bay, NY, provide quality care for their patients. They treat a variety of conditions, including Xerostomia. This is commonly known as Dry Mouth. As the name suggests, patients suffering from this problem don’t produce enough saliva. They struggle with chewing, speaking, and swallowing. It lowers your quality of life while also putting your oral health at risk. Schedule an appointment with our staff right away if you notice any alarming symptoms.

You may not realize it, but saliva plays an important role in your life. Besides everyday tasks like eating and speaking, it keeps your mouth clean. Saliva is necessary for washing your teeth of food debris. Without properly working salivary glands, you’re at risk for plaque and tooth decay.

The first step at your appointment with your Oyster Bay dentist is to determine the cause of your dry mouth. Treatment depends entirely upon the source. Talk to your dentist about your medical history, along with any medications you are taking. There are over 500 different medications that result in negative dry mouth symptoms. Do your research when starting any drugs. If the pharmaceutical is the trigger, you should talk to your prescribing physician about switching to another type. Certain autoimmune disorders also put you at risk. Another possibility is certain medical treatments. Chemotherapy is infamous for creating dry mouth.

Once the cause of your dry mouth is determined, the treatment can begin. Here are a few general tips for reducing negative symptoms:

-Reduce your sugar intake. Sugar naturally dries out your mouth. That means cutting out or back on tea, soda, alcohol, and coffee.

-Water is necessary for your health, including your dental! Water keeps your mouth moist. Increase your water intake for a wetter mouth.

-Invest in over-the-counter dry mouth treatments. These are sold at your local grocery store or supermarket. They are available in mouthwash, gel, and toothpaste form.

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, located in Oyster Bay, NY, are available for all your dental needs. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda, call 516-922-5730 or visit their website.

Dental Emergencies

No matter how careful you are in your everyday life, accidents always happen! You and your family must be prepared for all dental emergencies. At Oyster Bay Family Dentists, Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda offer emergency dental services. Call our Oyster Bay, NY, office right away when an accident occurs. Whether you hurt yourself playing sports, you fell or received facial trauma, we are here for you.

You must contact us as soon as your injury occurs. The quicker you do, the faster we can treat you. If you can’t get in contact with us for some reason, consider going to your local emergency department. Here is a basic guide while you wait for dental services:

-Dental crowns: whether they are missing or loose, you must locate the crown itself. If possible, try to place it back on the tooth. If it fits, try keeping it in place temporarily with over-the-counter denture cream.

-Missing filling: similar to a dental crown, it’s important to find it. Cover the area with sugarless gum for temporary protection.

-Toothaches: before scheduling an appointment, clean the area thoroughly. In certain cases, food or debris can get trapped between the teeth. This might be what’s irritating your mouth. If cleaning doesn’t work, see us right away.

-Tooth Injuries: when it comes to any injury directly to the tooth, try to save as much of the tooth as possible. If you break or chip a tooth, wash your mouth out while saving any of the fragments. Then apply an icepack to your face to reduce the swelling. For teeth that are only partially knocked out or dislodged, avoid touching the area at all costs. Reduce the swelling with anti-inflammatory medication. Lastly, we come to teeth that are completely knocked out. Find the tooth and try to place it back in its spot. If it won’t fit, get a cold glass of milk or salt-water, placing the tooth within it. This keeps the tooth alive while you wait for reattachment.

Your family should always be prepared for a dental emergency. When one happens, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists right away. We are conveniently located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule your emergency appointment with Drs. Robert West or Denise VeyVoda, call 516-922-5730. You can also visit their website.

Denture Stomatitis

As prosthodontists, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists have provided many people with new sets of teeth. When properly cared for, dentures will help to maintain a patient’s facial structure and can last for years. But they do require a patient to make changes to their oral hygiene routine, which is why we wanted to discuss the dangers of denture stomatitis.

Yeasts of the Candida genus are normally present in the mouth, but they aren’t usually harmful. Saliva contains antimicrobial enzymes that keep their population under control and washes away food debris, depriving them of a nutrition source. However, if a person wears an upper denture, the roof of their mouth may be covered and kept out of contact with saliva. This could allow Candida to rapidly multiply, creating the red sores that are commonly regarded as symptoms of stomatitis, or a yeast infection.

Yeast infections can be prevented by removing the upper denture and brushing it every day. Patients should brush the entire denture, not just the teeth, and they should use specialty toothpaste that won’t scratch soft plastic. (They may want to keep a separate toothbrush for this.) They should also brush the insides of their mouths before inserting the denture each morning. Stomatitis is not always painful, so patients will have to regularly inspect themselves for it visually.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that emerge in the back of your mouth. When wisdom teeth emerge, they will either come in naturally or crowd your gums. If your wisdom teeth protrude your gums, they need to be extracted at your local dentist. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we can tell you if your wisdom teeth need to be removed through routine x-rays.

In most cases, wisdom teeth will grow in on an angle which can cause crowding for your teeth and possible damage to your jawbone or nerves. Wisdom teeth that develop that only partially impact your gums increase the chance for bacteria to build which leads to more cavities and gum disease.

If your wisdom teeth are causing you pain or there appears to be an infection, please give us a call. We. The earlier you remove your wisdom teeth, the less chance your teeth will shift and cause further problems.

To learn more about all of the services provided at our practice, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Our office is located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert G. West or Denise VeyVoda, please visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Cracked Teeth

The prosthodontists at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists provide patients with lots of options for repairing damaged teeth. Sometimes a crack is merely a cosmetic issue, and sometimes it is painful and puts the tooth at risk for infection. Regardless, we’ll conduct a thorough assessment and implement a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing solution.

The smallest cracks are known as “craze lines.” These can be bonded over or covered with veneers, which are also common solutions when a small portion of enamel has chipped off. They are not usually indicative of a major health concern. However, a large crack creates an avenue through which bacteria may enter the dental pulp. In these cases, a patient would require root canal therapy, which would conclude with the crown being sealed. If a crack goes deep into the tooth’s inner layers or is wide, it may necessitate the replacement of the crown. When a vertical crack reaches the root of a tooth, the tooth will have to be extracted and replaced.

If a person frequently develops cracks in their enamel, they may be grinding their jaws in their sleep. These patients can benefit from the use of custom-fitted night guards. Patients are also advised to never use their front teeth for chewing or as tools, and to refrain from chewing ice.

Asthma and Oral Health

When people have chronic dry mouth, they are at greater risk for oral health problems. For this and other reasons, people with asthma need to be especially vigilant about maintaining their oral hygiene. We treat a lot of patients at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists whose oral health is compromised by limited saliva production (called xerostomia), so we wanted to provide asthma patients with some hygiene pointers.

Saliva is crucial to controlling oral microbes. It neutralizes acid, removes food debris, and contains enzymes that restrict the growth of bacteria and fungus. People with asthma commonly breathe through their mouths, particularly at night, causing them to be more vulnerable to microbial growth. This can cause them to have bad breath, tooth decay, and gum recession. Furthermore, asthma patients are often on medications that relax the sphincter separating the stomach from the esophagus, causing them to suffer from frequent acid reflux.

Asthma patients shouldn’t change medications without oversight from their doctor, but they should request changes when they are suffering recurrent dryness. We can assist them by prescribing stronger throat moisturizers, and they can stimulate additional saliva production by chewing sugar-free gum. Asthma patients should also brush their teeth at night after using inhalers, since inhaler medication often contains sugars which will be dispersed throughout the mouth.

Incipient Lesions

If you see strange white spots lingering on your teeth, that’s not just a cosmetic issue. It’s the sign of an incipient lesion, meaning a developing cavity. We at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists specialize in replacing damaged teeth, but we want our patients to be able to exercise preventive care and see us early in the tooth decay process. To that end, we thought it would be a good idea to discuss the development of white spots.

When enamel is being chemically eroded, it takes on a glazed appearance. This can be observed on the upper back teeth of people with chronic acid reflux, but is more often seen in people experiencing the early stage of tooth decay. As bacteria consume sugar, they produce acid as a by-product of their metabolization process. The acid gets stuck in the biofilm covering teeth, causing breakdown of the nearby enamel’s mineral structure and recession in gum tissue. If the demineralization goes on for as few as thirty days, a cavity will develop.

Incipient lesions are likely to appear in places where patients have difficulty brushing, such as the sides of teeth and around orthodontic brackets. Doing a better job of brushing can usually kill the infection, although the demineralized tooth may still look chalky afterward. We can help patients by assessing whether the infection is still active and by covering up the scar with bonding or a veneer. Our hygienists can also demonstrate brushing techniques to patients during regular check-ups, so that lesions will be less likely to develop.

Senior Dental Care

Even though the Tooth Fairy stops visiting when you’re older, that doesn’t mean you should stop taking care of your teeth! As you age, your dental needs shift. Problems that never occurred before start to manifest. This is especially true for senior citizens. Your teeth, like all bones, weaken as you age. Patients over the age of sixty are at a higher risk for tooth decay, extraction, and periodontal (gum) disease. Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda offer premium dental care for all ages. Learn more by contacting Osyer Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY.

When you get older, certain physical tasks become much harder. For senior citizens that struggle with brushing, your Osyer Bay dentists have some advice for you. The first thing you can do is buy an electric toothbrush. These are incredibly helpful. They provide you with a thorough cleaning while using minimal physical activity. You should also consider elongating the toothbrush handle. This lets you reach the back areas of your mouth effortlessly. Wrap the handle in materials like foam, rubber, or even tape tongue depressors to it. Any flexible material around the house will work. If you haven’t already, consider switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush. These are much gentler on your teeth and gums. Check out the oral hygiene aisle at your local grocery store. Many brands provide toothbrushes targeted toward senior citizens.

Dentures are an affordable and functional replacement for your natural teeth. Your teeth should come in a complete set. Dentures let you go about your everyday life as normal. If you’re interested, talk to your Oyster Bay, NY, dentists. At your initial appointment, a specialized mold is created from your mouth. This creates your personalized dentures. Doing so guarantees a perfect fit.

If you are a caretaker or live with an older individual, help them out with their dental routine. Remind them to schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda at Oyster Bay Family Dentists. To contact our office in Oyster Bay, NY, visit their website or call 516-922-5730.

Sealants

We offer a variety of prosthetics to repair dental damage at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, but when it comes to healthy teeth, a sealant can be most useful. Children are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay, so we often talk to their parents about getting sealants during regular dental check-ups.

The crevices in our molars and premolars can easily get caked in food debris. The shape of these teeth is necessary for them to grind up food, but they are hard to keep clean and food debris stuck in them may remain in place for several hours. Sealants are plastic shields for the teeth that smooth over crevices. They are thin enough to allow the chewing teeth to continue to function, but add a layer of protection against acid and make brushing easier.

Placing a sealant doesn’t require any preparation from the patient. After cleaning a tooth, we’ll apply an etching acid to increase its surface area. This will allow it to more easily bond with the liquid sealant. We will then use a blue light to harden the plastic, and the patient should be able to soon resume eating normally.

Oral Cancer Check-Up

At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we offer oral cancer screenings to our patients to look for signs of oral cancer.

During the exam our doctors will look for any lumps and spots in different areas in your mouth. Besides looking for lumps and abnormalities, our doctors might use their finger to feel the skin and tissue underneath your jaw for possible signs of cancer.

When possible, we advise our patients to avoid using tobacco as it increases your chance of developing oral cancer. If you consume alcohol regularly you have a higher chance of developing it. Our patients that have a family history of oral cancer or have previously been diagnosed with oral cancer are encouraged to have an exam at least once a year.

Don’t forget to ask for an oral cancer screening the next time you see us or if you notice any abnormalities in your mouth.

Preventing Gum Disease

Periodontal, better known as gum disease, is an inflammatory condition of the gums and bone support around your teeth. Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda encourages our patients to practice good oral health care to prevent gum disease from forming. Gum disease begins when bacteria grows in your mouth and causes you to loose teeth if not treated properly. When bacteria in plaque builds up on your teeth, your gums turn red or inflamed when brushing and flossing.

Some symptoms of gum disease includes swollen or bleeding in your gums, loose or shifting teeth, and persistent bad breath. Our doctors can diagnose the early stages of gum disease by examining your gums and the sensitivity of your teeth.

When possible, we encourage our patients to take the proper precautions to prevent gum disease. A few steps to ensuring your gums don’t become inflamed is to not use tobacco of any kind, brush and floss regularly, and follow a healthy diet.

Dental Phobia

If you have a fear of going to the dentist or people working in your mouth, you likely suffer from dental phobia. Dental phobia is a serious condition that leaves patients with a fear of the dentist panic-stricken and terrified in the days leading up to their appointment. Our staff at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists advises patients with dental phobia to let us know prior to their visit with us about their fears.

Studies have shown that about 9% to 15% of people avoid going to the dentist every year due to dental phobia. We don’t want your fear of the dentist to deter you for getting your teeth cleaned and getting a checkup twice a year. People who suffer from dental phobia are more likely to develop cavities and gum disease.

Remember to give us a call a couple of days before your appointment with us so can accommodate you the best we can and make you feel comfortable.

Impacted Canines

Teeth have predetermined tracks that they follow to emerge successfully through the gum line. When certain circumstances keep them from erupting, they become impacted. Most of these cases involve the third molars or wisdom teeth. The second is the maxillary cuspids or upper canines. Drs. Robert West and Denise VeyVoda of The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer treatment and post-operative instructions for impacted canines. Visit our office in Oyster Bay, NY, to learn more.

Your canines will do everything they can to reach their proper spot on the dental arch. The cuspids are needed for biting. They are the first teeth to touch together when you bite down. This guides all other teeth into place. They are the last teeth to come in but the most important.

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends all patients receive a Panorex x-ray and dental examination by the age of seven years old. Your Oyster Bay dentists identify and determine any possible issues with the adult teeth. Eruption pathways should clear by ages 11-12 years old. Otherwise, interventive actions are needed.

Treatment requires a mixture of orthodontic treatment and surgery. Surgery can remove a blocked baby tooth and reveal the impacted tooth. Orthodontic devices guide the tooth into the correct place. Altogether, it can take close to a year for the full eruption.

Following post-operative instructions is necessary for a full recovery. For impacted teeth that require removal, expect swelling and discomfort. Use ice or a cold compress to keep the swelling down. Drs. West or VeyVoda will either advise you to use over-the-counter medication or prescribe pain medication for you. It’s important to avoid any hard or hot foods during this process. Talk to your dentist about modifying your diet.

Alzheimer's Disease and Gum Disease

As specialists in dentures, it’s no surprise to us at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists that gum disease is closely tied to disease throughout the body. Dentists have long known that there appears to be a correlation between periodontal infections and Alzheimer’s disease, but it was thought that people with memory problems simply struggled with oral hygiene. Within the past few months, new studies have been published that shed more light on this issue and the importance of prevention.

One of the bacteria species that causes gum disease is Porphyromonas gingivalis. It secretes toxic enzymes called gingipains as a defense against white blood cells. Gingipains are found at elevated levels in the brains and spinal fluid of people with Alzheimer’s disease. We also know that P. gingivalis causes the production of components of the plaque that disrupt Alzheimer’s patients’ neurons. Another recent study established that P. gingivalis is able to move from the gums to the brain in living humans.

Scientists caution that it is too soon to say that gum disease is the sole cause of Alzheimer’s and that there are likely other factors, as well. But there is good reason to believe that gum infections and Alzheimer’s exist in a feedback loop. New research is being done into whether treating gum disease can break that loop, but it is a good idea in the meantime for everyone to stay vigilant in their brushing.

Instructions after Tooth Extractions

We don’t remove teeth without a good reason, but extractions are a routine procedure that can usually be completed without a problem. To ensure that patients understand the importance of following instructions, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists wanted to explain a little bit about why we take certain precautions.

Our main concern after removing a tooth is that the socket does not dry out. After a tooth is removed, healthy blood will form a clot that seals off the socket and the exposed jaw bone. But if the clot does not form or does not stay in place, not only will the socket become painfully dry, it will also become a way for bacteria and other harmful substances to enter the body. In the worse cases, tissue of the jaw bone could become necrotized.

Patients are advised to avoid sucking on straws or eating sticky foods after getting an extraction, because these could dislodge the clot. Smoking could also prevent a clot’s formation or create a suction that would dislodge it. Some medications also interfere with clotting, which is why patients should make sure to disclose all of them to us. A dry socket is a greater risk when removing the lower wisdom teeth, so those patients especially should be on guard against the bad taste and smell that could indicate a problem. If a dry socket does develop, we’ll be able to treat it with a pain-relieving, antibacterial dressing.

Cosmetic Care after Pulp Infections

We take care at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists that our patients will be pleased with the appearance of their smiles. When providing prosthetic teeth, we match their color to the teeth the patient already has, and we provide whitening services to remove external stains. But what do we do about intrinsic stains? Those could require a different approach because of their implication about a patient’s health.

Some intrinsic stains are harmless. Teeth may appear brown if a patient consumed too much fluoride during their childhood or black if they were exposed to tetracycline antibiotics. But those are rare cases. More often, intrinsic stains are due to an injury to the dental pulp. Besides causing a tooth to be black, red, or purple in color, pulp injuries and infections usually cause pain and a bad smell. If left untreated, an infection can spread, causing an abscess in the gum.

Root canal therapy is the normal way of removing infected pulp. Once the infected material is out and the patient is in less danger, their tooth may be filled with whitening gel and then sealed. After a week, the whitening agent can be removed and the tooth may be filled in normally. If the patient is still displeased with the color of their tooth, it may be covered with a veneer.

Periodontal Splinting

Having a loose permanent tooth doesn’t bring the same amount of excitement that it did when you were a kid. As an adult, it’s often a sign of injury, lost gum tissue, misalignment, or orthodontic treatment. Trying to eat or speak becomes uncomfortable. Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda of The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer a solution. Periodontal splinting attaches your weak teeth to strong ones, creating a single, stable unit. Contact our office in Oyster Bay, NY, to learn more.

Schedule an appointment with your Oyster Bay dentist as soon as a loose tooth is noted. Otherwise, it can damage other dental structures. Trauma is the biggest culprit for a loose tooth. Grinding or clenching your teeth is also a probable reason. Some patients even experience a combination of the two. Periodontal disease is also a likely cause.

By splinting your loose teeth, Drs. West or VeyVoda are able to correct your misaligned bite. This relieves the pressure behind the looseness. Temporary and permanent splints are offered. For temporary splints, there are extra-coronal and intra-coronal. The placement defines the kind needed. Extra are bonded to the enamel while intra requires a channel in the teeth. For permanent splints, a splint fuses the crowns of each tooth together.

Gum Grafting

Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda of The Oyster Bay Family Dentist offer gum grafting procedures to our patients. These are necessary when patients don’t follow recommended oral routines. Periodontal disease manifests when proper brushing and flossing isn’t utilized. The early stage is Gingivitis. It can be reversed while later stages of periodontal disease cannot. When your gums begin to recede gum grafting is necessary. Contact our office in Oyster Bay, NY.

Gingivitis occurs when bacteria and plaque manifest. This bacteria will continuously multiple until large pockets are formed. Drs. West or VeyVoda can clean these pockets out. This won’t get rid of them though. They reveal an abnormal amount of the tooth itself, making it dangerous and displeasing to look at.

A gum graft can fix this. It restores and corrects these gum pockets. Your Oyster Bay dentist starts by numbing the areas with a local anesthetic. Gum tissue is removed from the top of the mouth. It’s then stretched and stitched over the gums. The outcome is to cover the exposed areas of the tooth. A successful procedure encourages the gums to grow on their own.

Following your post-operative instructions is necessary for a successful procedure. It should take between 2-3 weeks to fully heal. It’s important to avoid eating difficult food during this time. Try to eat only soft and cold foods. Don’t engage in any sorts of vigorous exercise. Be very careful when brushing and flossing the healing area.

To learn more about the gum grafting procedure, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. We are located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert G. West or Denise VeyVoda, visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Lumineers

Dental lumineers are similar to porcelain veneers with one big difference: lumineers require no preparation and are done quickly. Veneers are made of thick porcelain while lumineers are ultra thin. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoyda can directly apply lumineers to your teeth. It’s quick, painless, and easy. Contact our office in Oyster Bay, NY, to learn more.

You don’t have to be embarrassed about your smile with lumineers. They correct issues like stained, chipped, gapped, crooked, and misshapen teeth. The entire process takes two easy visits to your Oyster Bay dentists. At the first appointment, your upper and lower teeth are used to create an impression or mold. Your customized cosmetic devices are created in a dental laboratory from the supplied impressions. Unlike veneers, you won't need drilling, shots, or temporary restoratives.

The lumineers are made between 2-3 weeks. You’ll schedule your second appointment after they’ve returned. Drs. West or VeyVoda will have you test out the lumineers. If they fit, they’ll be placed directly onto your teeth. It’s as easy as that.

There are many benefits to dental lumineers. The biggest being that it’s a timesaver. You only need two appointments for the complete process. You also save your natural teeth with lumineers. Veneers require you to trim off layers of your natural teeth. Not the case with lumineers. The bond is a lot more secure. Lumineers are placed directly onto the enamel. Lastly, it avoids creating post-procedure teeth sensitivity.

If you are interested in learning more about dental lumineers, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. We are located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda, visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Dental Implants

Teeth are like a puzzle, they’re meant to come in a complete set. The puzzle doesn’t work without that missing piece. That’s why Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda offer dental implant services to our patients at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Located in Oyster Bay, NY, dental implants are a permanent and recommended solution for missing teeth.

The entire process takes over a few months to complete. It starts with your Oyster Bay dentist taking x-rays of your mouth and jaw. If your bone structure is looking strong, you’ll be eligible for implants. Otherwise, you may need to get a bone graft.

At the beginning of the procedure, the specific area receives a dosing of local anesthetic. This will minimize any pain or discomfort. Drs. West or VeyVoda creates an incision in the gums. The implant, composed of a titanium screw, is inserted. It’s then shut with a suture. The placement of a temporary dental crown restores everyday functions. This lets you continue to eat and speak normally. It takes between 3-6 months for the area to heal. A healing process called osseointegration occurs, where the bone grows around the screw.

Once the implant has healed, the next stage can begin. An abutment is placed onto the screw. It will serve as the base for your new restorative device. A permanent restorative device is created from the abutment. At your final appointment, it’s permanently placed.

Bite Checks

As prosthodontists, the doctors of The Oyster Bay Family Dentists often restore people’s bite function, allowing them to chew and speak without pain. One of the most important parts of the biannual dental examination for every patient is the bite check, during which we’ll assess the mechanical condition of a patient’s jaw and inspect their teeth for wear.

People with obstructive sleep apnea or temporomandibular joint disorder commonly develop bruxism. The word “bruxism” describes nighttime teeth grinding and jaw clenching, which causes attrition to enamel and puts it, as well as prosthetic teeth, at risk of cracking. People who grind their teeth are also likely to develop jaw pain and their natural teeth may be pushed out of position.

We’ll ask patients whether they’ve been suffering from headaches or neck pain that could be related to bruxism. Our hygienists will inspect the patient’s teeth for signs of wear associated with bruxism, and the digital x-ray machines in our office will help us to determine whether the jaws’ shape and tooth placement is healthy. If there is a problem, we can recommend the patient use a night guard to relieve bruxism and discuss orthodontic options for tilted teeth. We may also do restorative work on teeth that have been worn down and reshape artificial palates to accommodate changes in the patient’s facial shape.

Sensitive Teeth

Do you dread your teeth coming into contact with something cold? If so, you don’t have to let dental sensitivity ruin anymore ice cream treats. At the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we restore patients’ teeth, protecting the nerves within, and we also educate patients about how to preserve their teeth’s natural protective tissues.

Our teeth have several layers. Surrounding the pulp is dentin, which is a porous substance. Covering it is cementum, and on the crowns, another protective layer called enamel. A crack in the outer layers makes the pulp vulnerable to infection and extreme temperatures, but more often, the problem is that the protective layers have slowly been worn away. This can be caused by exposure to acid.

Cavities are caused by caries, bacterial infections on the surface of teeth that secrete acid. Regular brushing and flossing is essential to preventing the development of caries. Acid might also enter the oral cavity from the stomach if the patient suffers from acid reflux or bulimia. The roots of the teeth are more vulnerable to sensitivity. Fluoride sealants can be used to bolster the teeth’s protective minerals, arresting the progression of wear. Avoiding soda and citric juice reduces direct contact of acid to enamel. We may also recommend that patients use extra-fluoridated toothpaste and get a gum graft if their tooth roots have become exposed.

What is a Prosthodontist?

As National Oral Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists wanted to say a bit about the importance of prosthodontics. Our office provides prosthodontic as well as general dental services, meaning that we are specialists in restoring teeth. Our Doctor Denise VeyVoda is also trained in plastic surgery facial reconstruction.

Although rates of natural tooth retention are much better now than they were generations ago, it is still common for people to lose or badly damage teeth throughout their lives. There are also people who are naturally missing some adult teeth. While many dentists are trained to place implants and artificial crowns, prosthodontists are able to handle more complex cases involving the restoration of a number of teeth and parts of the jaw bone. A person may require more extensive restoration if they have been without teeth for a long time and their jaw structure has deteriorated, or if they have been impacted by oral cancer.

Sometimes, tumors need to be removed from the jaw bone, or a section of the jaw bone needs to be cut away to access the tumor. Afterward, a portion of the face or the roof of the mouth will need to be replaced. Our doctors are able to provide reconstructive surgery using prosthetic appliances that will be carefully shaped and colored to fit the patient’s new face. These devices can also be used to help people who have suffered facial trauma, as can Juvederm facial contouring, restoring a patient’s confidence, comfort, and the functioning of their mouth and jaw.

National Facial Protection Month

Did you know that April is National Facial Protection Month? As prosthodontists, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists frequently restore missing and broken teeth. We want to see our work protected, and we want to ensure that our general dentistry patients who have not experienced traumatic injuries continue to enjoy their natural teeth. To that end, we thought this would be a good month to remind our patients of mouth guard protocols.

Athletes may complain that mouthguards are bulky and interfere with breathing, but this should not be the case when they are fitted properly. A mouthguard may be fabricated for a particular patient by a dentist, or an athlete may purchase a boil-and-bite model from online retailers or sports stores. The mouthguard and its container will need to be regularly cleaned with antibacterial soap or a cleaning solution sold by the manufacturer and should be kept out of high temperatures.

Mouthguards are required for most organized sports, including wrestling if the wrestler has braces. Orthodontic aligners are not substitutes for mouthguards. However, a young person or orthodontic patient whose teeth are shifting position rapidly may need to have their mouthguard frequently updated. People who skate and ride bicycles are also advised to wear mouthguards. We’re happy to help patients determine whether theirs needs to be refitted and to answer any other questions they may have.

Bone Grafting

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY., offer bone grafting services to our patients. Dr. Robert G. West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda are skilled and experienced professionals. Bone grafting is a common procedure used to prep the jaw bone for a restorative device. When a tooth is missing or extracted from the jaw, the bone starts to disintegrate. A bone graft will restrengthen the area.

At your first appointment, either Dr. West or VeyVoda will take an x-ray of your mouth. This shows us the condition of the jaw bone. Measurements are taken for the graft. In most cases, an appropriate bone graft will be ordered from a tissue lab. This tissue will match the length and width of your bone perfectly.

The procedure begins with the patient receiving general anesthesia. Once unconscious, one of our dentists will make an incision along the jaw. The bone graft will be inserted, held into place using pins, plates, screws, wires, and/or cables. The incision will be stitched and bandaged.

Recovery is entirely dependent on the patient. Their health and the size of the graft determine recovery time. Some recovery takes two weeks, while others can last up to a year. Avoid vigorous activity for as long as instructed. Follow any and all post-operative instructions given to you.

If you are in need of a bone graft or other dental services, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Our office is located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda, visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Zoom! Teeth Whitening

Zoom! Whitening is a new form of teeth whitening offered by Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. There are two forms of Zoom! Whitening available, Zoom! In-Office Whitening System and Zoom! Take-Home Whitening System. Both of these types of whitening offer an increase in at least 6 shades of brightness to your smile.

Teeth become discolored for a variety of reasons. Naturally, as we age, our teeth can start to lose their lackluster. Foods that are high in tannic acid, like grapes and tea, can have an effect. The most infamous teeth stainers are coffee and cigarettes. For some, cutting back on these items can bring their smile back up to where they want it. For others, Zoom! Whitening is the answer.

The Zoom! In-Office System takes about an hour to complete. It utilizes a light-activated whitening gel made out of hydrogen peroxide. The gel is placed onto your teeth and the light is turned on. This causes the hydrogen peroxide to break down. Oxygen is able to enter the teeth and whiten them. The entire procedure is completely painless. Many people just relax during the whitening, either sleeping, reading, or watching TV.

The Zoom! Take-Home Whitening System consists of take-home whitening trays and gels for you to use. Over three days, you will wear the whitening gel for 4-8 hours. Our dentists will let you know how long you should be wearing them for exactly.

There is almost no difference between the two forms, besides the obvious: one takes place at the office while the other takes place at your home. The Take-Home system brightens your smile by six shades, while the In-Office system brightens about eight shades.

If you are interested in our Zoom! Teeth Whitening services or other dental work, contact The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. We are located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule an appointment with Drs. Robert G. West or Denise VeyVoda, visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Root Canal

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer endodontic services for our clients. Endodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on the nerves or root of the teeth. When a tooth becomes infected, the cause is often in the roots. This results in what is known as the most common endodontic procedure, the root canal. If you are in need of a root canal, schedule your appointment with Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda.

If you suspect that your tooth is infected, do not wait to make an appointment. Left untreated, infections can spread and progress, including bone loss in the jaw. Modern technology makes root canals relatively straightforward and painless. At your appointment, a local anesthetic will be applied to the tooth. Then either Dr. West or VeyVoda will drill into the root canal. From here, the infected material can be spotted and removed. The tooth will then be filled with a sealant and a crown will be placed.

You may experience pain and soreness after the procedure. This is completely normal. Take over-the-counter pain medication to help. If you are worried that this isn’t strong enough, contact our office. Once your tooth heals you will be able to resume life as usual. You shouldn't experience any pain when eating or drinking.

To schedule your root canal at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, visit our website or call 516-922-5730. Our office is located in Oyster Bay, NY. Appointments can be scheduled for both Dr. Robert G. West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda.

Occlusal Adjustment

If you wake up in the morning with a sore jaw or teeth or feel like when you bite down that your jaw is lopsided, then you need to make an appointment with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda are highly skilled dental professionals. If you experience these symptoms, you most likely need to get an occlusal adjustment.

An occlusal adjustment fixes the misalignment of the bite. This can be caused by loose, shifting, crowded, or missing teeth. The result is an uneven pressure distribution throughout the entire mouth. An occlusal adjustment will rebalance your jaw, allowing your teeth to meet evenly again. The adjustment itself causes minimal pain and a small amount of discomfort. A dental drill is used with a fine filing stone. Removal mouthpieces are also used. These protect the surfaces of the mouth and help relax the jaw.

Patients with loose and shifting teeth are ideal candidates for an occlusal adjustment. Patients who grind or clench their teeth are also eligible. In certain cases, teeth sensitivity can be corrected this way as well.

Drs. West or VeyVoda will use a computer scan to take hundreds of images of your mouth. Once uploaded into the computer program, anomalies within your mouth and bite will be spotted. This assures total relief from your symptoms, along with addressing all areas of concern.

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are located in Oyster Bay, NY. To schedule your appointment with Drs. Robert G. West and Denise VeyVoda, visit our website or call 516-922-5730.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are an excellent way to redesign and reshape your entire mouth. Dr. Robert West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda will listen to your concerns and questions while walking you through our cosmetic service options. Veneers are thin, durable porcelain shells that cover your individual teeth. They fix and cover issues such as staining, cracked teeth, spaces, misaligned teeth, and chipped teeth.

The process of having veneers placed requires two to three separate appointments at Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY. The first visit will be a consultation with our staff. It’s recommended that you do some research beforehand to get a better understanding of what you’re looking for. Knowing what you want to change and achieve in your smile is crucial. Veneers are highly customizable. Shape and brightness are two of the most significant choices.

Once a decision has been made, the next step is to make a mold of your teeth. After cleaning the surfaces of the teeth, the impression is taken and sent to a high standard dental laboratory. It will take between 10-14 days for your veneers to be fashioned. In the meantime, you will be provided with temporary veneers. When we receive your permanent veneers back you will come in and have them permanently bonded to your teeth.

Night Guards

Bruxism, commonly referred to as teeth grinding, is a dental concern our staff at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists encounters often. The solution: Night Guards. An appointment with Dr. Robert G. West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda can help you get started on your dental recovery.

The majority of teeth grinding occurs at night while you’re sleeping. You most likely don’t even realize that you’re doing it. Regardless, your mouth and jaw will still be reaping the consequences during the day. Grinding damages enamel wears down your teeth, causes jaw pain, and irritates your gums. Damaging the enamel will expose dentin, making your mouth vulnerable to bacteria. Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, connects your jaw to your skull. This joint is used for eating and speaking. With prolonged exposure to bruxism, your TMJ can end up with lasting damage. A night guard is the only way to bring your teeth grinding to a grinding halt.

At your appointment, Drs. West or VeyVoda will take an impression of your teeth. This mold is then sent to a dental lab to create your custom fit night guard. Similar to mouthguards worn by athletes, the night guard will create a barrier between your bottom and top teeth. Doing so stops your teeth from grinding together. Night guards are very durable and can last for up to ten years.

There are a few other tips to help you stop grinding. Make a conscious effort to realize when you're grinding and stop. Refrain from chewing on gum or objects like pens. Try to cut back on caffeine and alcohol, which increase your likelihood of grinding.

Invisalign and Braces

Dr. Robert G. West, D.D.S. and Dr. Denise VeyVoda D.D.S. of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists are running a promotion for new patients that gives $100 towards your first Invisalign treatment (with the printed certificate). Invisalign is a new method of correcting your teeth without the use of traditional braces. Dubbed “Invisible Braces,” they are virtually unnoticeable, along with being comfortable to wear.

If you qualify for Invisalign, a series of clear plastic aligners are used to create tooth movement. Through a computer program, a mold is intricately designed to match your mouth. This allows your teeth to move perfectly into place. This treatment is recommended to patients experiencing mild to moderate spacing or crowding.

Once you receive your Invisalign, it is kept in place 24-hours a day. Exceptions are for brushing, flossing, and eating. Every two or three weeks you must come in to get your aligner replaced. Because the shape of your teeth will shift, so will your Invisalign. Compared to conventional braces, this method of orthodontics is praised for its efficiency. Not every tooth is shifted, just the ones that are needed. Because of this, many patients praise Invisalign for their comfort.

If you are interested in Invisalign and our orthodontic services, contact us today. Located at our office in Oyster Bay, NY, our staff can help you pick out at an Invisalign treatment that works for you. Dr. Robert G. West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda can meet with you to discuss your needs. To set up an appointment, contact us through our website, or by calling 516-922-5730.

Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath isn’t always caused by something as benign as eating pungent food. We at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists have restored a lot of teeth, and we know that a lot of health problems can reveal themselves through a foul odor. To help our patients protect themselves, we wanted to discuss some of the causes of halitosis and what can be done about them.

The most common cause of halitosis is odor from bacterial build-up. Bacteria eat the food debris that gets trapped between teeth, and if they are allowed to fester enough, the acid they produce may damage gum tissue. But bacteria also commonly live on the tongue, where they may have another food source in the form of nasal drip when the patient is sick. This is why we encourage patients to brush their tongues and use a scraper on them every day.

Certain conditions increase a patient’s risk of oral bacterial build-up. Dry mouth makes it harder to swallow food debris and changes the mouth’s pH level to make it more hospitable to pathogens. Diabetes causes saliva to contain more sugar, which could fuel bacteria. Onions and garlic, besides being acid reflux triggers, contain chemicals that pass from the bloodstream into the lungs and cause bad breath to originate there. We recommend that patients suffering from dry mouth use artificial throat moisturizers. Patients should also remember that chewing sugar-free gum, besides masking halitosis, can also stimulate new saliva production and remove food debris.

What Is Arestin?

When the body develops a bacterial infection, we use an antibiotic to treat it. The same applies to infections in the mouth.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists utilize arestin for patients with periodontitis who need a scaling and root planing procedure performed. Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection, caused by plaque, which has settled underneath the tooth’s surface below the gum line.

Arestin has the ability to reduce the severity of periodontal disease.  After a scaling and root planning procedure, the medicine is applied to the gum in powder form.  In a clinical study, when used in addition to scaling and root planing, arestin reduced harmful bacteria by nearly 2 times as much as scaling and root planing alone. This is because adding arestin to the mix disrupts the progression of periodontitis by specifically targeting the active infection.

If you have questions or concerns about the status of your periodontal health, please give us a call. To learn about the treatments we offer, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. What Is An Apicoectomy?

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists perform many root canals to save and repair teeth that are badly damaged or infected.  A root canal procedure involves removing any inflamed or infected tissue, and thoroughly cleaning the root canal system.  In most root canal cases, the tooth heals and doesn’t require further treatment. When an infection won’t go away or the canals become re-infected, our doctors can perform an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy removes damaged tissue and seals a tooth’s root from any further infections.  The procedure involves a small incision in the gums, followed by removal of any infected tissue and finally the end of the root tip itself.  A root-end filling is placed there to act as a seal, preventing reinfection. The gum is sutured, and most patients only feel slight discomfort or swelling during healing.  If you have a tooth infection lingering after a root canal gone wrong, please contact us to discuss your treatment options.

To learn more about the apicoectomy procedure and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Infections and Impacted Crowns

As permanent teeth push their way into the mouth, they sometimes fail to completely clear the gum line. When this happens, the patient is at risk for pericoronitis, an infection surrounding a crown. This situation is relatively common in teenagers, so we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists want our patients to be able to recognize when they need help.

The wisdom teeth are the largest molars and the last to erupt. They emerge in late adolescence, when the rest of the teeth are already in place and the jaw bone has solidified. The lower wisdom teeth can easily become impacted, meaning that they are blocked from emerging fully. A flap of gum tissue, known as an operculum, is likely to still be partially covering the impacted tooth. Bacteria can build up in between the operculum and the impacted tooth’s crown, resulting in infection. The longer it lasts, the more painful and swollen it can become.

Professional hygienists can clean an operculum and rinse it with antibiotics. The patient may also try cleaning their mouth with a saltwater rinse. But the problem is likely to persist until the impacted tooth is extracted or the operculum is removed. We recommend regular dental check-ups so that we can determine whether a tooth is likely to be impacted and strategize preventive treatment.

Orthodontic Options for Adults

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists provide orthodontic care for adolescents and adults.  It is often recommended to start treatment on an adolescent patient once all the permanent teeth have come in, but adults can still get great results from orthodontic care.  There are several options for adults beginning orthodontic treatment, and the best one for you will depend on what needs to be corrected.

To correct bite issues and straighten teeth, the traditional braces method includes brackets on the teeth and connecting wires that are tightened over the course of treatment. Clear braces use the same method but the materials are tooth-colored to avoid a metallic look.  Accelerated orthodontics are applied to correct cosmetic issues in about six months. Severe misalignments and bite issues can’t be corrected in such a short time, but if your concerns are purely cosmetic, it’s a great option for a short treatment time that can completely transform your smile. Invisalign treatment is popular because of its almost invisible appearance.  A treatment plan consists of a series of clear aligners that straighten teeth over time.  Come see us and find out what will be best to correct your smile!
