Crowns Restore Smiles

Dental crowns are a common way to restore damaged teeth.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists use crowns to repair teeth that have been chipped or have a significant amount of decay.  Our natural-looking crowns fit right over a damaged tooth like a little cap. These crowns restore function to a patient’s teeth and blend perfectly with their smile.

The process for installing a crown can usually be completed in two visits.  To prepare the tooth your dentist will remove any decay, and may need to reshape the remaining tooth to ensure a great fit for the new crown.  Once the tooth has been prepared, your dentist will take an impression of the area.  This impression is sent to a dental lab where the crown is fabricated.  Ask us about temporary options to wear while your new crown is being made.  Once your custom crown is made, the crown will be cemented into place by your dentist at a second appointment.  Our crowns blend right into your natural smile and can last a lifetime!

Night Guards

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists see plenty of patients dealing with negative side effects of bruxism.  Bruxism is defined as any regular grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw. This is usually the result of an incorrect bite or crooked teeth, but stress will intensify bruxism.  Some teeth grinders only do so at night and may not even realize it.  If you ever wake up with a stiff or sore jaw, this could be a sign you are grinding your teeth at night and shouldn’t be ignored.

Patients who continually grind their teeth often end up requiring crowns, bridges, root canals and implants. In severe cases tooth loss can occur, and partial or complete dentures may be needed.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists fit patients with custom night guards to protect their teeth from the negative effects of this habit. When a patient needs a custom night guard, the process begins by taking an impression of the mouth.  This impression is sent to a dental lab where a final custom product is fabricated.  The durable product then protects the grinding surfaces of the teeth and aligns the jaw.  At night this protects teeth and can even help improve sleep!

To learn more about night guards and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Manage Tooth Sensitivity

To treat sensitive teeth, you first have to get to the root of the problem and believe it or not, the root is where it begins. Tooth sensitivity is common and it can come and go over time. If hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods make you cringe, you may want to discuss your treatment options with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists.

You can reduce tooth sensitivity by brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. When teeth are sensitive, it could be painful to perform these actions but remember to be very gentle on your gums. Pain after consuming hot or cold beverages can be due to decay or a cavity, so it’s important to visit us for a dental checkup to ensure that your mouth is in a healthy state. Letting tooth sensitivity go untreated can lead to oral health complications so it’s best to seek treatment immediately.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth sensitivity, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Diet and Dental Health

Oral systemic health and diet go hand-in-hand. A poor diet can lead to periodontal disease, tooth decay, and can even cause enamel to wear down over time. Foods that contain sugars of any kind accelerate the tooth decay process and though most foods contain sugars, certain foods are part of a healthy diet and need to be consumed. If you need a refresher on what foods to eat for your oral health, The Oyster Bay Dentists are here to inform you.

Added sugars are often present in junk foods, like cookies, candy, and pastries. To maintain a balanced diet, you should consume foods from each of the five major food groups and limit the number of snacks you eat. Wise choices include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products like cheese and milk. These foods will keep the mouth clean, and help protect it from dental disease.

If you have questions or concerns about diet and dental health, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure to remove a frenulum, or muscular attachment between two tissues, from the mouth.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists perform frenectomies to correct a number of issues patients may have with their teeth, lips, and tongue.

We each have a frenulum in between the font teeth (both upper or lower) that connects the inner surface of the lip to the gums. Removing this attachment is called a labial frenectomy. Patients who have receding gums can benefit from this procedure, because a strong frenulum from the gum to the lip can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to further recession.

Another frenulum is located underneath your tongue, and removing this is called a lingual frenectomy.  Patients that have an enlarged frenulum underneath their tongue will not be able to move their tongue freely.  This interferes with speech and is often called ‘tongue tie’. Lingual frenectomies are typically performed on young patients, who can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

Sealants for Pediatric Patients

Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists take pride in serving the families from our community, and we offer sealants for young patients to start protecting teeth early.  We want to see your whole family set up for a lifetime of great oral health!

Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.  In children and teenagers, most tooth decay occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars where the pits and grooves can trap food and bacteria.  Dental sealants are applied to the surface of these back teeth much like paint.  When the plastic resin is brushed on, it fills any pits and grooves on the surface and then hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, and bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay.  Sealants also protect tooth enamel from plaque and acids, and can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years.

To learn more about sealants and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Reducing Children's Dental Anxiety

At the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we are attentive to the needs of patients of all ages, including children. Although children can feel anxious about seeing the dentist, it is important for them to have regular check-ups. We want to work with parents to make these visits as comfortable as possible.

Children should start making dental visits as soon as their first tooth comes in, so hopefully, the experience won’t seem strange to them by the time they’re school-age. Let children know that the dentists and hygienists are friends who want to help clean their teeth and make sure they’re growing right. It’s not necessary to describe procedures you don’t know your child will need. We can provide children with more detailed explanations of what we’re doing when they arrive and demonstrate our tools to them.

If one parent feels anxious about visiting the dentist, it may be better for a different one to accompany the child. Children will pick up on implications that the parent expects the visit to be painful or scary, such as if they are offered a reward for good behavior, which is why it’s best to treat the visit as routine and casual.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

People whose gums are bleeding need help and The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are here for them. Many people accept spitting some blood out with their toothpaste as normal, but it’s actually a sign of gum disease. We wanted to use this post to help our patients prevent this problem.

In most cases, bleeding gums are caused by infection, although there are several other factors which contribute to it. The gum pockets are an easy place for decay-causing bacteria to colonize, and the tartar they produce accumulates on dental crowns around the gum line. This irritates the gum tissue, causing it to bleed when brushed. That doesn’t mean patients should stop brushing, but they may need to switch to a toothbrush with softer bristles. Keep in mind that brushing harder is not necessarily a good thing and that a professional hygienist’s help is necessary to remove plaque.

Dry mouth makes oral infections worse. There are several medications, including anti-depressants and heart medications, which suppress saliva production, throwing off the mouth’s pH level and depriving it of a means of washing away tartar. Pregnant women also tend to experience bleeding gums due to hormonal changes. Oral hygiene is especially important for these people, as are regular cleanings.

Bad Breath Causes and Treatment

Bad breath is embarrassing, especially when others notice. Usually, bad breath isn’t a cause for medical attention because most of us experience it at some point in our lives, but sometimes it can be a sign of something more serious. To rule out any underlying medical conditions and to assure that your mouth is healthy, schedule a consultation with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists.

Bad breath can linger after consuming foods such as garlic, onions, and even coffee. It’s not only associated with food, however. It can be a symptom of dry mouth, occur as a result of smoking, and even be a warning sign for gum disease. Treatment for bad breath will depend on the cause, but a consultation will include a dental exam while our doctors review your oral hygiene habits.

If you have questions or concerns about bad breath, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Sugar’s Effect on Teeth

It’s common knowledge that sugar is bad for your teeth. If you go to the dentist and are told you have a cavity, sugar is likely the culprit. This is because tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth that uses sugar from foods and drinks to produce acids that damage the teeth. Our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists don’t expect you to quit sugar cold turkey, but we’d like to encourage you to reduce your intake.

Sugar attacks the teeth and provides no nutritional benefits to their components. Soft drinks, sports drinks, and energy drinks have high acidity levels, so if you drink them on a daily basis, you are at a high risk for developing cavities. Fruit juice has a medium acidity level, but can be watered down to reduce the levels of sugar. As you may already know, water is your smile’s best bet for staying healthy. Milk is also beneficial for keeping enamel strong.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth decay, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Invisalign

At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, our doctors want to give every patient a great smile.  Invisalign is the invisible alternative to traditional braces for adults and teens. Invisalign is recommended to correct mild to moderate spacing or crowding of the teeth.  Any severe misalignment may require another method, so always consult with us to see if Invisalign will be effective for you.

An Invisalign treatment plan consists of a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that are custom-made for your teeth.  To begin your treatment, impressions or scans of your teeth are used to create a full set of aligners customized to your teeth and your treatment plan.  Depending on your individual treatment plan, each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks for at least 20 hours a day.  Most patients can complete treatment in less than a year, and aligners should be removed to eat and to brush and floss.

What Is An Apicoectomy?

At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, our doctors perform many root canals to save and repair teeth that are badly damaged or infected.  A root canal procedure involves removing any inflamed or infected tissue, and thoroughly cleaning the root canal system.  In most root canal cases, the tooth heals and doesn’t require further treatment. When an infection won’t go away or the canals become re-infected, our doctors can perform an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy removes damaged tissue and seals a tooth’s root from any further infections.  The procedure involves a small incision in the gums, followed by removal of any infected tissue and finally the end of the root tip itself.  A root-end filling is placed there to act as a seal, preventing reinfection. The gum is sutured, and most patients only feel slight discomfort or swelling during healing.  If you have a tooth infection lingering after a root canal gone wrong, please contact us to discuss your treatment options.

To learn more about the apicoectomy procedure and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Drink More Water

The best thing you can do for your smile is to keep your mouth clean. In addition to brushing and flossing on a daily basis, it’s important to stay hydrated to keep your mouth moist. Water replenishes saliva, our body’s natural defense against dry mouth and tooth decay. Sugary beverages may wash down your food, but as we’ve previously mentioned, they provide no nutritional benefits to tooth enamel. Our doctors at The Oyster Bay Dentists are here to encourage you to drink more water to protect your teeth.

Water cleans the mouth with every sip, keeping teeth cavity-free. Water washes away the sugars that food and beverages leave behind to attack tooth enamel. Additionally, when saliva runs low, the mouth becomes dry. The frequent dry mouth can lead to tooth decay. Next time you reach for a sugary drink, try replacing it with water, or if you decide to consume the sugary beverage regardless, wash it down with a refreshing glass of water.

Hygiene with Bridges

Oyster Bay’s Dr. Robert West and Dr. Denise VeyVoda are highly skilled prosthodontists, providing patients with long-lasting replacement teeth. But to ensure lasting oral health, patients need to know how their hygienic routines will change to accommodate structures such as a fixed bridge.

In the same way that patients slide floss along the sides of their teeth, they should also slide floss along the underside of the bridge. Some companies manufacture specialty floss with stiffened tips that can be threaded through the gap between the bridge and the gum. But patients can also use a threader, which is like a soft, flexible sewing needle, to loop normal floss.

Bridges that are secured with implants instead of resting on natural teeth may have a bit more space for patients to work with. Electric toothbrush and water pick manufacturers are now designing adjustable heads for their devices that can be used on implants. Patients also get good results from using a proxy brush, also known as a Christmas tree brush, to push away food debris.

When Dental Bonding Breaks

Unfortunately, no one is immune to dental problems nor are they impervious to dental accidents. When a tooth has been damaged by injury, it may chip, crack, or fracture.  Fortunately, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists can repair the tooth with dental bonding. Dental bonding provides the same aesthetic appearance as tooth enamel, but not the same strength. Therefore, like a natural tooth, it can chip too.

Weakened tooth enamel can be repaired, but once tooth enamel is broken, it will not grow back. Dental bonding is putty like resin that is applied to the tooth, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape. Like enamel, dental bonding can take a beating. If your diet consists of highly acidic foods, the acidity can damage bonding over time. With proper oral care, dental bonding can last for up to seven years. Call us immediately if you notice sharp edges, or if your teeth feel strange when you bite. This is a sign that dental bonding needs a touch-up.

If you have questions or concerns about dental bonding, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Extrinsic Tooth Stains

Tooth discoloration can make even the healthiest smile look undesirable. We’ve previously discussed intrinsic stains in a previous post, but now our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists would like to discuss extrinsic stains. Extrinsic tooth stains occur on the outer surfaces of the teeth and can range in color from yellow to dark brown. Though extrinsic staining isn’t detrimental to your oral health, it may affect your self-esteem. Fortunately, we offer whitening services to fix that.

If you regularly drink beverages like coffee, tea, soda, or wine, your teeth may eventually develop a dark hue. Additionally, lifestyle habits such as smoking may also cause extrinsic stains on the tooth. Most often, extrinsic stains can be removed with professional whitening treatment. Not everyone is a candidate for whitening, so to discuss if this treatment method is right for you, schedule a consultation with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists.

If you have questions or concerns about teeth whitening services, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Fixing Loose Teeth

As prosthodontic specialists, we at Oyster Bay Family Dentistry regularly help patients who have suffered trauma to their teeth. When permanent teeth come loose slowly over time, it is usually due to periodontal disease, which we classify as secondary occlusal trauma (primary occlusal trauma is damage without infection). Fixing weak teeth requires a combination of periodontal and reconstructive therapy.

Periodontal disease doesn’t just destroy gum ligaments. It also causes the jaw bone to erode. When patients lose their back teeth, they sometimes try to compensate by chewing with their incisors. But the front teeth are not suited for that task and the bite forces they are subjected to further loosen them, and can also cause them to be pushed outwards, forming an open bite.

Antibacterial treatments and removal of dead tissue are necessary to prevent periodontal decay from getting any worse, and splints are commonly used during the reconstructive process. Whether the splint is permanent depends on the individual case. Teeth that have migrated may require orthodontic correction. Lost jaw tissue can be replaced with a bone graft, which can then be used as the basis for implants to replace any teeth that have been lost. But it’s much better for a patient to maintain their oral hygiene and come in at the first sign of trouble.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit OysterBayDentists.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Dental Abscess Causes and Treatment

Toothaches can be very painful, but when they lead to infection the problem becomes more serious. Most of us know how painful a canker sore can be, but what about a dental abscess? An abscessed tooth is a painful infection that is commonly caused by tooth decay, dental trauma, or periodontal disease. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists encourage you to seek treatment right away if you have signs of symptoms of a dental abscess.

Most abscesses are painful because they originate from a bacterial infection in the mouth. Bacteria exist in plaque, so if you lack proper oral hygiene, you increase your risk of developing a dental abscess. Abscesses can form very quickly and resemble a pus-filled bubble. The abscess will not go away on its own, so it’s impossible to seek treatment as it will need to be drained and treated with antibiotics. If the infection is not treated, it can destroy the bone surrounding the infected tooth. Rinsing with salt water may reduce the pain, but it will not eliminate the problem.

If you have questions or concerns about dental abscesses, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Zoom Whitening

Are you afraid to show some teeth in your selfies because you’re self-conscious about discoloration? If so, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists have a solution, with Zoom whitening. Zoom is a bleaching process used to lighten discoloration of enamel and dentin which may be caused by food and beverages and/or smoking. With a whiter smile, you can feel better about yourself while decreasing your risk of developing oral problems.

During your consultation, our doctors will examine your teeth and gums to ensure that they are in good health. If you are able to move forward, you will sit in our dental chair and receive three whitening gel applications for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. Once completed, you will receive instructions on how to practice proper oral care. It’s important to understand that your teeth won’t stay white on your own; you will need to maintain the brightness with daily brushing and flossing. Additionally, you should refrain from smoking, as tobacco products will stain teeth.

If you have questions or concerns about ZOOM whitening, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Intrinsic Staining

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists provide technologically advanced services for removing dental stains, but there is an important distinction to be made between stains that are extrinsic to the tooth and those that are intrinsic. Extrinsic stains caused by things such as smoking and drinking dark fluids and only affect the outermost layers of the teeth. They can be removed through bleaching. But intrinsic stains are caused by overexposure to fluoride, use of tetracycline antibiotics, or pulp inflammation, and sometimes require a different approach.

Of course, an intrinsic stain can still be masked with a veneer or bonding. But pulp inflammation indicates that a tooth is injured or infected. We will use the advanced imaging devices in our office to detect whether there is an infection within the tooth or at its root. A root canal may be necessary to remove the inflamed tissues, after which the crown may be either filled and sealed or replaced entirely. Our doctors are highly skilled prosthodontists, so if a crown does need to be replaced, patients may rest assured the new one will be cosmetically pleasing.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit OysterBayDentists.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Prevent Periodontitis

Periodontal disease has four different stages and today, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists choose to discuss periodontitis. If you’ve been told that you have gingivitis, we highly recommend that you reverse it by developing a rigorous oral hygiene routine. Periodontitis develops if gingivitis is left untreated and this aggressive form of gum disease can lead to tooth loss if not treated promptly.

If you have persistent bad breath, gums that are reddish-purple, or gums that are tender to the touch, then you have some form of periodontal disease and it’s important to get a proper diagnosis so that you can begin treatment. Because periodontitis involves plaque buildup that can cause a “pocket” or a “gap” between the gums and teeth, you increase your chances of developing a dental abscess. During your dental appointment, our doctors may use various tools to loosen and remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth. Once you leave the office, it is up to you to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to prevent this condition from returning or becoming more severe.

If you have questions or concerns about periodontal disease, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Oral Piercings and Teeth

These days, tongue rings, lip rings, and cheek piercings are a popular form of self-expression amongst young adults. Though they may look trendy, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want to explain the consequences that can stem from oral piercings. The mouth contains millions of bacteria, and if your body rejects an oral piercing it’s possible that your mouth and tongue could swell, making it difficult to breathe. They can also chip or crack the teeth, and if this happens it will require a dental procedure to fix the problem.

It is important to follow aftercare instructions after receiving an oral piercing as this can lead to infection. It’s critical to keep your mouth as clean as possible because an oral infection can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Additionally, jewelry such as a tongue ring can bump against your teeth while talking or eating. To avoid chipping a tooth, you should avoid “playing” with the jewelry in your mouth as this can damage your teeth and gums. Remember to remove your oral jewelry if you are playing sports, and if you notice any signs of infection, give us a call immediately.

If you have questions or concerns about how oral piercings can affect your oral health, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Halitosis in Children

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists serve patients of all ages with all sorts of problems, including halitosis. Bad breath isn’t just a problem for adults, and while it is often caused by lack of proper brushing, there are some other common reasons for it in children which our dentists may need to investigate.

Dental information for children heavily emphasizes tooth brushing, but it is important for people to brush their tongues, as well. The tongue is an environment bacteria easily grow in, as are the tonsils, and bacteria growth in these areas will cause a bad smell. Bacteria also multiply quickly when the child has an oral or sinus infection, such as a cold sore or nasal drip. Foreign objects stuck up a child’s nose also trigger nasal drip, supplying bacteria with a food source.

Saliva has an important role in washing out bacteria, so children with dry mouth (xerostomia) are also at increased risk for halitosis. This group of children includes those who breathe through their mouths, children who don’t stay hydrated, and children on medications for anxiety and ADHD which often cause dry mouth as a side effect. Sugar-free gum is a favorite trick of dentists’ to stimulate new saliva production.

Acid Reflux and Tooth Sensitivity

As skilled prosthodontists, Dr. VeyVoda and Dr. West supply patients in the Oyster Bay area with replacement partial and full teeth. But as dentists who care deeply about their patients, they also want people to know how to avoid tooth damage in the first place. One source of enamel erosion which people often have less awareness of is acid reflux.

Acid reflux occurs when the sphincter that keeps hydrochloric acid in the stomach opens during swallowing. If this occurs at least twice a week, the patient is said to have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux is commonly (but misleadingly) called heartburn because of the painful cysts it creates in the esophagus, but tooth enamel isn’t strong enough to withstand hydrochloric acid, either. People with GERD commonly suffer from pitted, discolored, sensitive teeth, particularly in their upper palate. If erosion reaches an advanced state, the patient could be at a higher risk for dental infections and find that their teeth back teeth’s grinding surfaces have lost their function.

Badly damaged teeth can be replaced with a number of methods, including partial and full crowns. But patients can prevent damage by reducing their intake of foods that are high in acid, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol, and by maintaining better posture.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit OysterBayDentists.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer cosmetic periodontal surgery so that any patient can have their perfect smile.  Everyone wants to make a great first impression with a nice smile, and the overall look of your smile includes your gums.  Even patients with teeth in good condition feel like their gums keep them from enjoying their best smile, but we can help.

Cosmetic periodontal surgery is an elaborate way of saying sculpting the gum line.  Patients with a gummy smile, uneven gum line, or elongated teeth often ask what can be done to achieve the look they want.  To correct these issues, cosmetic periodontal surgery can include removing excess gum tissue and exposing more of the tooth, placing soft tissue grafts to extend the gum line, or both.

Soft tissue grafts are typically harvested from the roof of the patient’s mouth.  This tissue is then placed where gums have receded to create a balance in the amount of tooth versus gum that is exposed.  In areas when excess gum tissue is hiding teeth, the gum tissue is removed to achieve the same balance.  If you think your smile would benefit from cosmetic periodontal surgery, please contact us.

To learn more about cosmetic periodontal surgery and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Scaling and Root Planing

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want to help you make sure it never gets to that point.  When sticky bacteria called plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup.  This only leads to more gum recession.  Scaling and root planing are used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help repair gums. The procedure begins with scaling, which is removing plaque from the surface of your teeth all the way down to your gums. This is followed by root planing, which involves minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  Once the plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to.   Local anesthetic is used during this procedure, and your dentist may recommend completing the treatment over a series of appointments.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Baby teeth require care as soon as they emerge. The Oyster Baby Family Dentists want to help parents maintain their children’s oral health, and part of doing that is alerting them to the danger of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, a pattern of decay on babies’ front teeth that results from overexposure to sugar.

The risk sugar poses to teeth has more to do with how long it is left on teeth than on the amount of intake. Although most parents know not to put juice or other sugary drinks in baby bottles, they may not be aware that milk and formula contain enough sugar to cause problems if not wiped off the child’s teeth quickly. Unfortunately, babies aren’t usually given water along with nutritional drinks, so their teeth aren’t being rinsed. And, just as snacking all day without brushing their teeth in between increases older children’s risk of tooth decay, drinking from a bottle for a long time increases babies’ exposure to sugar.

Limiting the amount of time babies have bottles and providing them with water are two of the most important ways of preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. But it is a good idea anyway to make the switch to cups around their first birthday.

Dry Socket Dangers

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are some of the best in the business of oral surgery. We not only are skilled in advanced techniques, we also care deeply about our patients’ recovery. As part of our prevention efforts, we want everyone undergoing extractions to be familiar with the dangers of dry sockets.

Although a dry socket is always possible, it is more likely to result from difficult extractions which require the surgeon to make incisions and leave sutures. It is necessary for a blood clot to form for the socket to be protected from infection and drying out. Therefore, patients are advised not to take birth control or other medication which is known to interfere with clotting, or to sip from straws, smoke, or otherwise create pressure in their mouths which could cause clots to come loose.

If a socket does dry out, a patient will know it by their severe pain. They should request an immediate emergency appointment so we can provide them with painkillers and antibiotics. One of our doctors will use a vacuum to clean the wound and dress it in gauze or paste. Dressings will be changed every few days until the socket closes to guard against further complications.

What Thumb Sucking Does to Teeth

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists care for patients of all ages, including young children. Many first-time parents worry that their child’s thumb sucking habit could harm their oral health, and we want to educate them about the possible consequences.

Thumb sucking is common in most children under four and will probably not have a lasting effect. These children’s facial bones are still flexible. However, if a child keeps on sucking their thumb (or a pacifier) after beginning to lose their baby teeth, there could be serious problems, including tooth or jaw misalignment and damage to the shape of the tooth ridges or roof of the mouth.

Children suck their thumbs as a means of soothing themselves. If a child is old enough for their habit to be dangerous, hopefully it will be possible to explain to them why the dentist is concerned and include them in finding ways to break the habit. However, children with deep-seated anxiety may develop an equally harmful practice of pushing their tongue against their front teeth. In these cases, there are orthodontic devices which can discourage tongue-thrusting, but it may be necessary to consult with a child psychologist.

HPV and Oral Cancer

As part of The Oyster Bay Family Dentists’ observance of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we’re teaching our patients about the changing landscape of oral pathologies. Last year, the rate of new oral cancer diagnoses associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV) outpaced diagnoses of new cases of tobacco-associated oral cancer for the first time, and we in the medical community are left relying more heavily on our patients than ever before to help us keep them safe.

HPV-associated oral cancer usually occurs in the back of the mouth and the top of the throat, which is why medical literature sometimes calls it “oropharyngeal” cancer. The tissue of this region is so deeply creviced that randomly scraping it is unlikely to catch an HPV infection. Even if HPV were caught, that may not prove helpful, because 80% of American adults get an HPV infection at least once in their lives, but only one out of nearly two hundred strains of HPV is believed to cause oral cancer.

Because throat cancer may not be easy to see, patients should request examinations if they are experiencing pain, numbness, or swelling in their throats or in the region between their ears and jaws. Throat cancer can still be checked for with a tactile examination and HPV-associated cancers are easier to treat than tobacco-associated cancers, but adults should not think that avoiding smoking makes them immune to oral cancer.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting may not sound like a dental procedure, but a bone graft has become a routine procedure to help bodies heal. The bone graft dentists perform is on the jaw bone.  A jaw bone can weaken over time if tooth loss or gum disease has left a certain portion of the jaw vulnerable. When a patient needs a dental implant to replace a lost or damaged tooth, the jaw bone needs to be strong enough to receive the implant. A bone graft is used to strengthen the jaw before the implant is placed.

The bone graft procedure consists of harvesting bone material from a healthy part of a patient’s body, and transferring it to a site that needs reinforcement. This gives the injured or deficient bone a replacement, and encourages growth of new material around the site. There are synthetic options for bone grafts, but a dental graft is usually obtained from a different spot in the patient’s own mouth. The healing process can take several months, and your jaw is monitored by your dentist until it heals enough to handle the placement of an implant.

Mini Dental Implants

The availability of mini dental implants is important because they make treatments possible for patients who previously could not benefit from dental implants. Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of a traditional dental implant, which allows them to be used in narrow spaces where regular implants were not an option. Oyster Bay Family Dentists

Other than replacing teeth in narrow spaces, mini implants are also used to install a full upper or lower denture. Four to six mini implants are placed along the gum line to serve as the base for securing the denture. Most mini implants can be placed without an incision. The small size makes it possible for them to be inserted right through the gums into the bone. No incision means no stitches, and eliminates the need for a recovery period. This means the restoration or denture can usually be placed right away or a short time after.  Mini implants are also less expensive than regular implants. A dentist can tell you if a mini implant is a good solution for you.

To learn more about mini implants and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Importance of a Maintaining a Healthy Mouth

If you maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine, it results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy. This means your teeth are clean and free of debris, your gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss, and bad breath is not a constant problem. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists and their team of hygienists take pride in teaching proper oral hygiene techniques to patients. Additionally, they will point out areas of your mouth that may require extra attention while brushing and flossing at home.

Taking good care of your mouth – teeth and gums – does more than help ensure you have a bright, white, smile. The mouth is the doorway to our body and its first line of defense. It performs essential functions than any other part of the body. Good oral hygiene and oral health can improve your overall health, reduce the risk of serious disease and perhaps even preserve your memory in your golden years. When your mouth is unhealthy, your body will feel the effects in many ways and your health, in general, will suffer. In between regular visits to the dentist, you should be brushing thoroughly twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals, as well as using dental products that are approved by the American Dental Association (ADA).

If you have questions about dental health or oral care, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. The 2-Minute Brushing Rule

When we hit the snooze button in the morning, two minutes flies by like lightning, when we are waiting in traffic, two minute seems like an eternity. At the sink, two minutes is the time you need to spend brushing your teeth in order to clean them adequately and reduce plaque. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want you to understand why you should follow the 2-minute brushing rule.

Most people don’t even come close to brushing two minutes and if you don’t brush your teeth long enough, you may not be getting your teeth clean enough. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily establish the basics of good oral hygiene. Brushing helps to clear particles of food from the teeth, but a brush can’t reach between teeth, which is why flossing is also necessary. To make the two-minute mark seem like less of a lifetime, split the mouth into four quadrants. That way, it should take about 30 seconds each quadrant. The proper position of the brush head should be along the gum line, half on the gums and half on the teeth, pointing the bristles at a 45-degree angle. Don’t forget to brush every part of your mouth, including your tongue!

If you have questions about oral care, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

How to Care for Dentures

Oral hygiene is just as important to maintain for people with dentures, but some of their life-long habits are going to have to change. To help our patients through this transition, we’ve supplied this guide on how to care for their new teeth.

Even if a denture is supported by implants, it should be removed each night. This will give patients an opportunity to clean it and for their gums to rest. Natural teeth produce a protective film, but dentures can easily be scratched by minerals. Therefore, dentures should be brushed with specially designated toothpaste. Patients should only ever use soft-bristled brushes for oral hygiene, and this remains true while they are brushing their gums and tongue, as well.

Besides being vulnerable to scratches, dentures can warp if they are placed in hot water. But it is important to always keep them moist. There are cleaning solutions available to soak them in, but these products are supplements for brushing, not replacements. Dentures should only be carried over soft surfaces and patients should seek professional help for any repairs or adjustments which may be necessary.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit OysterBayDentists.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Dry Mouth

We depend on saliva to keep our teeth, and by extension, the rest of us, healthy. Unfortunately, dry mouth is a common side-effect f chemotherapy and a number of medications, particularly ones for pain and psychological conditions. It is important for patients to understand that dry mouth is a serious condition so that they can seek help.

Older people are usually the ones who suffer from dry mouth due to the aforementioned medications, as well as a history of smoking or Sjögren’s syndrome. (This disorder dries out the eyes as well as the mouth and is mostly found in women over fifty.) People who suffer from dry mouth have difficulty sleeping through the night, as well as swallowing and breaking down food. The body’s immune system also depends on saliva to wash away harmful bacteria and their food sources, and teeth have to be kept moist to maintain their protective film.

Since it may not be possible for patients to change medications, they will need to consider products which can stimulate saliva production or provide their teeth and gum tissues with extra protection. Patients should also cut back on sugar and caffeine.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

The application of lasers in dentistry gives The Oyster Bay Family Dentists plenty of opportunities to perform a wide variety of dental procedures that they otherwise may not be capable of performing. Dental lasers can be used to reduce the comfort of canker and cold sores as well as expose partially erupted wisdom teeth, and help treat tooth infections. In dentistry, lasers are a safe and effective way to provide patients with precision treatment that minimizes pain and recovery time.

There are several advantages to laser dentistry. For example, dentists may not need to use a drill or administer anesthesia in some procedures, allowing patients to be more relaxed. Laser procedures are more precise and can reduce symptoms and healing times associated with traditional treatments. In addition, lasers can reduce bacteria in both diseased gum tissue and in tooth cavities, and control bleeding during surgery.

If you have further questions regarding laser dentistry, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Can Wisdom Teeth Have Cavities?

As we age, we acquire wisdom, and the same goes for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, you may need to schedule a consultation with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. When this happens, the risk of infection increases, because if a tooth becomes broken, it could leave a hole that makes the tooth vulnerable to bacteria and decay. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean.

Depending on the individual case, one of our doctors may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Avoid Denture Pain

Denture pain typically stems from poor fitting or poorly adjusted dentures. It may also be a result of new dentures, worn over soft tissues that have not developed thick, toughened layers of protective keratin. If you are experiencing gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, mouth infections and/or dentures that move around in your mouth, give The Oyster Bay Family Dentists a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. In addition, you should never experience pain when wearing your dentures. If you do experience pain from your dentures and this discomfort is not treated by speaking slowly, eating soft foods or using an adhesive, your dentures may need to be replaced. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we have plenty of tooth-replacement options for you to choose from if dentures aren’t working out.

If you have dentures that are causing you pain, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Signs and Symptoms of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition. However, it’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. If you suffer from gingivitis, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists will provide you with an individualized treatment plan before it leads to periodontitis and eventual tooth loss.

Gingivitis – an inflammation of the gums – is the initial stage of gum disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque – the soft, sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms constantly on teeth and gums. If the plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing, it produces toxins that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. Classic signs and symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen, tender gums that may bleed when you brush. Another sign of gum disease is gums that have receded or pulled away from your teeth, giving your teeth an elongated appearance. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing.

If you experience gum inflammation, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Binding or Splinting

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists provide a wide array of prosthodontics for teeth compromised by injury or periodontal disease. But sometimes, it is not necessary for weak teeth to be extracted. Binding teeth together is an ancient practice which modern medicine has made much more satisfactory and comfortable.

If a patient’s teeth are weak due to periodontal disease, our doctors will want to remove decayed tissue, to start with. The teeth will also be cleaned. Binding, also known as splinting, is usually done on the front teeth with a fibrous strand that is attached to their backside. The fiber is porous so that it may absorb adhesive resin, and only produce a small ridge along the patient’s teeth. Our doctors will etch the teeth with an acidic gel (which is typical whenever something is attached to the teeth), and temporarily fill the gaps between them to protect the gum tissue.

Binding molars is more complicated and may involve cutting into them in order to place a metal splint along the top. But both types of splints work by distributing the force of the patient’s bite evenly among the bound teeth. This can compensate for an individual tooth’s weakness without doing the kinds of intrusive surgeries necessary for implants or permanent dentures.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit OysterBayDentists.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Intraoral Camera

Intraoral cameras combine two parts of our core philosophy at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists: our dedication to serving our patients with the most up-to-date technology, and our belief in transparency and patient inclusion. With this diagnostic tool, we have a greater ability to investigate our patients’ mouths for signs of trouble than ever before.

The camera is inside a wand-shaped handheld device which operators can move freely within a patient’s mouth. The wand also includes a LED, allowing the high-resolution camera to produce real-color images from every angle. Images produced by the intraoral camera are shown on the digital screens within our office, allowing us to easily combine them with our software dedicated to predicting the effects of orthodontics and planning surgeries. The images are easy for lay people to interpret, allowing patients to use them while talking to their insurance companies, and caregivers to feel like they have enough information to make decisions for their family members.

Other tools are still necessary to provide a full view of a patient’s mouth; x-rays are, of course, necessary to see bone below the gum line, and oral cancer screenings require us to examine soft tissue below the surface. However, the intraoral camera is highly reputed to promote patient compliance and improve trust between patient and doctor.

Replacing Your Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we want you to know how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

If you have further questions regarding toothbrush care, give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Can You Rebuild Tooth Enamel?

The tooth consists of four layers: enamel, cementum, dentin, and pulp. The enamel, cementum, and dentin are hard and calcified, while the pulp in the center of the tooth contains nerves and blood vessels. Tooth erosion happens when acids wear away on the enamel of the teeth. Enamel erosion can be caused by several factors including excessive soft drink consumption, a diet high in sugar, and environmental factors such as friction and stress. The enamel is not living tissue, so your body can’t rebuild it once it’s damaged. However, to rebuild tooth structure and protect teeth from further erosion, our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists may recommend tooth bonding or dental crowns.

Enamel helps protect your teeth from daily use such as chewing, biting, crunching, and grinding. Although enamel is a hard protector of teeth, it can chip and crack. Unlike a broken bone that can be repaired by the body, once a tooth chips or breaks, the enamel is gone forever. Because enamel has no living cells, the body cannot repair it once it’s been damaged.

If you have a chipped or broken tooth and would like to discuss your treatment options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Sensitive Teeth Causes and Treatment

The winter months are upon us and if you are experiencing tooth pain when the cold wind blows, you may have sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth are caused when your gums pull back and expose the surface beneath, called the dentin. This soft layer makes up the inner part and roots, which have thousands of tiny tubes that lead to the tooth’s nerve center (the pulp). Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive tooth pain. This is why it’s important to visit The Oyster Bay Family Dentists for regular dental checkups.

Fortunately, sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Having a conversation with one of our doctors is the first step in finding relief from your discomfort. After he determines the reason for your sensitivity, treatment may be as simple as applying an in-office fluoride gel to help you manage the sensitivity.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Diabetic Oral Care

People with poorly controlled diabetes are more prone to dental problems. This is because they are more likely to develop infections of their gums and the bones that hold the teeth in place because diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the gums. If you have diabetes, your oral care should be your top priority and The Oyster Bay Family Dentists can help you achieve your smile goals.

If you have diabetes, symptoms of dental problems include bleeding and sore gums, frequent infections, and bad breath. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, managing your blood sugar level is critical. The higher your blood sugar level, the higher your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Additionally, high blood sugar may cause dry mouth and make gum disease worse. The decrease in saliva can cause an increase in tooth-decaying bacteria and plaque buildup. You can prevent these problems by maintaining good blood sugar control, brushing and flossing and least twice a day, and schedule a dental checkup with us every six months.

If you have questions about diabetic oral care, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Dental Implant Failure

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. In fact, they are one of the most reliable long-term methods of tooth replacement. However, as with any other surgical procedure, there are a variety of internal and external factors that cause complications or even total failure of treatment. If this ever were to happen to you, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are here to assess the situation.

Osseointegration describes the formation of a direct functional and structural connection between a person’s bone and an artificial implant. There are two primary reasons for “later” implant failure after the osseointegration process has been successful. These include over-stressing implants with too much biting force or inflammatory disease of the gum tissues and/or bone around the implant. Prevention plays a tremendous role in avoiding implant failure. Once the implants are placed, it’s crucial to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Make sure you schedule regular dental cleanings to help keep the tissues around your implants healthy.

If you have questions about dental implants, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Dental Veneers for a Brand-New Smile

Confidence in your smile can take you a long way. While you should feel confident in whatever smile you have, we understand that cosmetic issues can make you self-conscious. This is why The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer cosmetic dental procedures in our Oyster Bay, NY office. One of the most dramatic and beautiful options we have are veneers.

Veneers are shells that are placed over your existing teeth. They are able to create a completely new smile without major dental work. They work well for almost any cosmetic issue including misshapen teeth, gaps, cracks, and discoloration. Because of their strength and durability, they can last up to ten years with good care.

Veneers can be made for a full set or just one, depending on what your specific needs. To apply them, your dentist will take off a very small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth. This is about the thickness of the veneer that will take its place. Impressions are then taken of your teeth to send to a dental laboratory where the custom veneers are created. During this time you will wear a set of temporary veneers so you can continue to use your teeth safely and comfortably. When the new veneers are ready, they are bonded into place.

If you desire a brand-new smile, dental veneers are a wonderful option. To schedule an appointment with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, call our Oyster Bay, NY office at (516) 922-5730 or visit our website, www.oysterbaydentists.com.

Ways Brushing Can Harm Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth two to three times per day is what keeps your chompers healthy and shiny. However, did you know that there is a wrong way to brush your teeth? The Oyster Bay Family Dentists of Oyster Bay, NY know you have probably heard how to brush well, but do you know what not to do? Keep reading to learn more!

Brushing Too Soon
Believe it or not, there is such a thing as brushing too soon. There are acids in our food that soften our enamel. So while it is good to brush after you eat, you should wait at least thirty minutes so your enamel has time to re-harden. Otherwise, you may brush away the softened enamel. If you are concerned about acid, rinse out your mouth with water after consuming something very acidic like pop or sour candies.

Using Too Much Force
Another common way to wear down enamel is by brushing too hard. In order to remove plaque, all it takes is a light touch with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Stiff bristles or too much force can wear down enamel and irritate gum tissue. Worn down enamel can lead to an increased risk of cavities and cosmetic issues. Irritated gums can lead to gum recession. Both worn down enamel and recessed gums can cause sensitivity.

Brush well and keep up with your flossing for a healthy mouth. To schedule your next cleaning and examination with The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, call our Oyster Bay, NY office at (516) 922-5730 or visit our website, www.oysterbaydentists.com.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At The Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example, if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.
You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:
  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.

Dental Fillings

To treat a cavity one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth that have been worn down from misuse (tooth grinding). Here at the office, we utilize white fillings, also known as tooth colored fillings, because they exude the most natural looking appearance.

Composite resins (tooth colored fillings) provide solid durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-size fillings that need to survive the moderate pressure from the constant pressure of chewing. Composite fillings require the tooth to be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled, which is why they may take longer to apply than any other type of filling. Although no filling lasts forever, tooth colored fillings have been known to last for over 10 years. It is a safe, affordable and attractive solution for many dental drawbacks.
