Smoking and Pulpitis

As specialists in prosthodontics, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists have seen a lot of damage caused by smoking. We’ve provided prosthetic face pieces as well as teeth for people suffering from oral cancer. Recently, scientists uncovered evidence of even more oral health hazards caused by smoking: the disappearance of immune system mechanisms in dental pulp.

When dental pulp becomes inflamed, it is said to have “pulpitis.” This can be due to an injury, but is usually because bacteria have decayed the surrounding enamel and acid is leaking in. The pulp within our teeth depends on antimicrobial peptides to defend it from infection. Smoking is known to weaken the immune system, making smokers more vulnerable to gum infections, and now it appears that smoking can wipe out the pulp’s antimicrobial peptides.

Pulp infections make teeth extremely sensitive. They can also spread into the bloodstream or into surrounding tissues, causing sepsis. We can treat pulp infections with a root canal, although the odds of success for smokers are lower. If necessary, we may talk to the patient about removing and replacing the tooth. However, it is important to note that the researchers also found that defense mechanisms can return after the patient quits smoking.

Tooth Decay during the Holidays

Between candy canes, eggnog, and Christmas cookies, sweet treats abound at the end of the year. We’ve provided a lot of people with replacement teeth at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, and would hate to see anybody have another outbreak of gingivitis due to tooth decay. But we want our patients to enjoy the holiday fun, too, so we thought we’d offer some suggestions for teeth-friendly winter socializing.

The longer the teeth are exposed to sugar, the more time bacteria will have to eat it and produce acid. Bacteria are able to consume simple sugars quickly, but they can also metabolize starch. Bits of food debris lodged in between teeth and dental cusps are obviously a potential source of decay, but so is the residue left by sugary drinks. Hard candy is also a tooth decay hazard because it remains in contact with the teeth for a long time and tends to deplete the mouth’s saliva, which is needed to rinse away food debris and maintain the mouth’s pH level.

People produce the most saliva while eating large meals, but socializing sometimes prevents us from avoiding snacks and drinks. Often, it is still acceptable to chew sugar-free gum (as long as it is spat out discreetly). This will dislodge some food and stimulate saliva production. Another option is to alternate sips of water with sips of other drinks to prevent dry mouth and give the teeth a wash. We can also try to favor sugar-free candy and remember to bring floss with us to use when convenient.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ/TMD)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw (the mandible) to your skull at the temporal bone. Injury to your jaw, the joint, or muscles of your head and neck can lead to severe pain and discomfort. In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders can be alleviated with self-managed care or nonsurgical treatments such as a mouth guard. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists can provide long-term relief for patients who are experiencing Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) symptoms.

Other causes of TMD include: grinding or clenching your teeth, which puts a lot of pressure on the joint, movement of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket of the joint, arthritis in the TMJ joint and stress, which can cause you to tighten facial and jaw muscles or clench the teeth. Common symptoms include clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open your mouth, a tired feeling in your face, or pain or tenderness in your face, jaw, neck, and shoulders.

If you have questions or concerns about TMJ or TMD, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Reasons for Extractions

With the advanced imaging tools available in our office, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are well-prepared to do routine dental extractions as well as prosthodontic work. In general, we would rather save a tooth than remove one, but there are times, particularly in adolescence, when extractions are the best choice.

Overcrowding is the most common reason for extractions in young patients. Permanent teeth start erupting in childhood, but the back molars, or wisdom teeth, often do not emerge until the end of the teen years. Orthodontic work has usually already been completed by this point, so the wisdom teeth may disrupt other teeth’s alignment, and they are likely to get caught themselves. The wisdom teeth are not the only teeth that can be impacted; baby teeth may need to be extracted if they do not fall out on their own because they create a risk of the adult teeth getting stuck. Premolars are also frequently removed to prevent overcrowding.

It’s rarer for teeth to be extracted due to infection, but it can happen if repeated root canals fail. It was formerly common for dentists to remove patients’ teeth when supplying them with dentures, but we can now fabricate partial dentures that have room for a patient’s natural teeth. When patients come in for regular cleanings, our x-rays will help us determine whether a tooth is infected or at risk of being impacted.

Diabetes and Tooth Loss

The experienced prosthodontists of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists have provided many people with dental implants and dentures. Even if a person suffered from periodontal disease and their teeth become loose as a result, it may be possible to provide them with a second chance at oral health. But gum disease has some complicating factors we want our patients to be on the look-out for, and one of the most common of these is diabetes.

People with diabetes have elevated levels of inflammation and more difficulty fighting off infections. Inflammation is the immune system’s way of isolating disease-causing bacteria and of providing white blood cell support to an infected area. But it also causes pain and discoloration, and when there are bacteria in the gum pockets, it often causes gums to bleed. Gingivitis literally means “gum inflammation” and is usually caused by bacterial infections. If an infection progresses, it could turn into periodontal disease (also called periodontitis), which describes the recession of gum tissue from around tooth roots. This causes teeth to come loose and could result in their falling out.

There is some evidence that gum disease and uncontrolled blood sugar influence each other. People with gum disease have higher glucose levels, and people with diabetes have higher rates of gum disease than the general population. But the relationship also works in reverse; when people with periodontitis are treated, their blood sugar tends to be better regulated. We hope that people with diabetes will understand how important it is for them to maintain their oral hygiene and to continue to see us for regular cleanings.

Oral Systemic Health Connection

Oral systemic health is the connection between oral health and overall health. Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted that prove if a patient has poor oral health or a lack of an oral care routine, they have a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and dementia. The health of your teeth and gums is critical to maintaining healthy organs. Your best form of prevention is visiting The Oyster Bay Dentists twice a year for routine exams and professional dental cleanings.

According to numerous studies, there are three ways that oral disease may affect your overall health. First, bacteria from the gums will enter the saliva and from there may adhere to water droplets within the air you inhale each time you breathe. These bacteria may be aspirated into the lungs, and may potentially cause infection. Additionally, periodontal disease that is left untreated can become so aggressive that bacteria may enter the bloodstream and lead to further complications. To keep a healthy body, maintain a healthy mouth by brushing for two minutes at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day.

If you have questions or concerns about oral-systemic health, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Post-Operative Swelling

We do a lot of restorative work and extractions at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. Some of our procedures can get pretty involved, but tooth extractions are usually a simple process. Following any kind of surgery, some swelling is expected, which is why patients should know what to expect and how to handle it.

The body’s inflammatory response rushes white blood cells and nutrients to the site of an injury. It will usually be more severe following complicated procedures. However, even a simple extraction will result in noticeable swelling within twenty-four hours. Patients should minimize this by using cold-packs. A cold pack can be held against the skin for fifteen minutes at a time, and then removed for fifteen minutes. If all goes well, swelling will peak within thirty-six hours, and patients can then work to reduce it by applying the same procedure with hot packs.

If the swelling continues to get worse forty-eight hours after the procedure, the patient should inform us. We also need to know if the skin turns black or white, as that could indicate infection. For many procedures, patients’ lips are anesthetized. Biting down on them when they are in this state could lead to a lot of swelling, but swollen lips will usually get better on their own unless the skin is broken and they become infected.

Dental Instruments

We hope all our patients feel comfortable at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists. We use a lot of interesting instruments to provide the best healthcare possible, but we recognize that they may be a source of anxiety for some people. Because regular dental cleanings are so important, we thought it would be helpful if patients felt they had the vocabulary to talk about our instruments.

For regular cleanings, our hygienists use handheld mirrors and explorers. The explorer is the hooked metal instrument we use to break up hardened bits of tartar. We also use it to test the sturdiness of enamel and determine whether there is an active infection. Explorers come in many shapes, and some are also called “probes” in reference to how they are used to test whether there is decay in the gum pockets. If there is, a flattened hook called a scaler can be used to clean decay out.

When tooth decay is identified, we have other specialized tools for repairing it. Localized anesthetic is delivered through a syringe and the drill site will be kept under running water to prevent heat damage. The material for the filling will be applied and contoured using a blunt-tipped instrument called a burnisher. Suction hoses called evacuators are used to remove broken up tartar and decayed enamel.

Tooth Decay in Children

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want parents to know that infant dental care is important from the very beginning. In fact, many dentists recommend an initial visit before the child’s first birthday to make sure that teeth and gums are properly cared for. Babies are born without harmful bacteria in their mouth, and studies have proven that moms (rather than dads) typically infect their children before age 2. This is because tooth decay can develop from breast milk if you don’t wipe your baby’s teeth and gums with a clean, damp washcloth after a feeding.

There are daily health habits that you and your child should practice, such as eating a proper diet, exercising, bathing, and sleeping. Caring for your mouth is as important as caring for the rest of your body. Teach your child that cleaning teeth and gums removes a sticky film called plaque and that plaque contains harmful bacteria that can cause tooth decay. In addition to teaching them oral care lessons, don’t forget to schedule his or her dental appointment!

National Dental Hygiene Month

It’s a great time of year in October! Leaves are changing, hot drinks are in season, and it’s National Dental Hygiene Month. Dentists once believed that people would lose all their teeth if they lived long enough, but thanks to fluoridation, less smoking, and better hygiene, people are now retaining healthy teeth throughout their lives. In the spirit of the season, let’s review good hygiene.

Anybody who has teeth should be brushing theirs twice a day. We recommend brushing for two minutes per second, being sure to cover every surface. To clean the inward-facing side of your lower front teeth, point the brush vertically. On the outer side, brush sideways, but be sure you don’t skip the gum line. After brushing, floss your teeth thoroughly by sliding floss all the way down each side of each tooth and making a scooping motion to capture tartar. Don’t forget to floss your back teeth. You could also use a device such as a Waterpik, but not anything sharp that wasn’t made to be used on teeth.

Once a day, you should also scrape your tongue. This will prevent bad breath and bacterial build-up. Rinsing with mouthwash may also be helpful. Lastly, by chewing sugar-free gum after meals, you can remove some food debris so it doesn’t sit there for hours until the next time you brush.

Gum Disease and Liver Disease

Oral health isn’t just a matter of dentistry; it’s integral to overall well-being. At the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, our skilled prosthodontists often treat patients who are facing cancer and cirrhosis. We’re excited to share the results of a new study showing that treating gum disease was associated with a decrease in cirrhosis symptoms.

Prolonged inflammation of the liver could cause it to develop scars. When this happens, the liver is less able to filter harmful substances from the body. Inflammation increases and people often experience reduced cognitive ability. Smoking and alcohol use, both of which fuel periodontal disease, also cause cirrhosis, but cirrhosis can also result from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The frequency of periodontitis in people with other forms of liver disease prompted scientists to investigate whether there is a causal relationship. According to the recent study, people with cirrhosis who were treated for gum disease experienced an increase in cognitive ability and production of bacteria that reduce inflammation. Those who remained untreated experienced no change. More research is required to know for sure whether there is a link or how it works, but oral hygiene and regular cleanings can certainly improve the smiles and oral comfort of people with liver disease.

Pediatric Dentistry

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are proud to serve the families from our community, and we want them to know it’s just as important for children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled between when the first baby tooth appears, and the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth. Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.

Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early, and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community!  To learn more about the services we offer, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Periodontal Maintenance

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want to make sure it never gets to that point for you and your family!  When plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup, which only leads to more gum recession.  A scaling and root planing procedure is used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help reverse the progress of gum disease.  The procedure beings with scaling, which is the process of the dentist removing plaque from the surface of the teeth, all the way down to the gums. Root planing is the term for any minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  When plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away will have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to as they heal.

Causes of Gap Teeth

As prosthodontists and providers of Invisalign treatment, we at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists repair a lot of gap teeth and overbites. But what causes these sorts of malocclusions to form in the first place? Today we’re looking at the origins of diastema (spaces) between the upper front incisors and what a patient’s treatment options are.

Diastema may be the result of something preventing the teeth from drawing together. In the upper front teeth, this would likely be the labial frenum, the strip of tissue connecting the inside of the lip to the jaw. When this tissue is too thick, there are surgical options for reducing it, including the use of our diode laser. Once the frenum is reduced and if there are no other bite issues, it may be possible to close the gap simply by applying veneers.

A more common reason for gap teeth is tongue thrusting. This habit can also result in an overbite and can push the teeth at an angle, requiring the patient to get orthodontic treatment. Tongue thrusting may be due to psychological stress, but it could also be an involuntary reflex triggered by throat obstructions. The assistance of an ear, nose, and throat doctor may be required to tell for sure. In children, sucking on a thumb or pacifier also increases the risk of gap teeth or an overbite developing.

Dentures

Teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but sometimes accidents happen and they go missing. Whether you’ve lost teeth to dental trauma, decay, or an injury, it’s important to know what your replacement options are. Dentures are a non-invasive way to restore teeth, because they are natural looking, comfortable, and can restore regular function to your chewing and speaking habits. Here at Sun Family Dental, the denture process begins with a consultation from The Oyster Bay Family Dentists.

To place dentures, the first step involves removing the teeth that are being replaced. Once the teeth are removed, the soft tissues will need to heal, and this could take a couple of weeks to accomplish. Once this part of the process is complete, one of our doctors will take X-rays, as well as a mold of the gum and jaw so that the dentures can be sent to the lab. Once they return, the final step is to see how they fit. Some adjustments might need to be made along the way to ensure that they fit properly and are not causing any pain or discomfort on a long-term basis, but in the end, you will be left with the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

If you have questions or concerns about dentures, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Back-to-School Check-Ups

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are not only specialists in prosthodontics. We also provide general dental care to people of all ages. Everybody should get their teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year. For children, check-ups are especially important because they allow us to monitor their development and plan interventions. If they’ve missed an appointment, the beginning of the school year is a great time to make up for it.

Children get dental infections more often than adults. While baby teeth are not permanent, pain can still be severely detrimental to a child’s well-being, and it is good for them to learn good oral hygiene habits early. Gingivitis or toothaches in a child may also be an indicator of another issue, such as diabetes or sinus infections, so children’s complaints should always be taken seriously. A check-up provides us with a chance to administer a fluoride sealant, which will provide additional protection against tooth decay.

Our office is particularly well-equipped to carry out dental extractions. During a child’s appointment, we’ll use x-rays to determine whether their adult teeth are coming in correctly, or if the wisdom teeth or others need to be removed. If necessary, we can also refer children for orthodontic work to ensure a healthy, attractive smile.

When to Replace Fillings

Nobody should put up with a toothache. Sensitive teeth require the attention of a dentist, and if the problem is related to a filling, it will not get better on its own. At the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we want our patients to be aware of when a filling needs to be replaced.

Before placement of a filling, the decayed portion of the tooth is drilled away. This may cause discomfort for the patient for a few days, but the pain should not be severe or last for long. The patient also should not have any difficulty closing their teeth together. If they do, the filling is “high” and needs to be contoured. If the filling seems to be leaking, the material must have changed shape while setting and needs to be removed to prevent infection.

The bonding used to cement teeth is not permanent. The upper lifespan of a filling is about ten years. After that, the bonding may crack, creating a place for bacteria to hide in. During regular dental appointments, a dentist will check to ensure the stability of the patient’s fillings and remove ones that are at risk of failure.

Avoiding Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

The oral surgeons at Oyster Bay are highly experienced providers of extractions and replacement teeth. In order to help patients better understand their options, we wanted to provide information about a rare but serious issue called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

Osteonecrosis refers to the death of bone tissue. It could happen to the jaw if it was exposed by something such as a severe infection, but in the modern world, it typically only happens as a result of tooth extractions. When teeth are extracted, the sockets usually close over the exposed jaw bone, but there could be complications if the patient is on bisphosphonate medication. This kind of medication is used to prevent bone resorption and is used to combat osteoporosis and the side effects of chemotherapy. Most ONJ cases occur in people who received bisphosphonates intravenously.

If ONJ is identified, the dead bone can be shaved and treated with an anti-bacterial rinse. But it can be avoided completely if patients fully disclose their medications and future treatment plans with all of their doctors, so oncologists will know not to start chemotherapy until after tooth extractions and oral surgeons will know not to recommend extractions to people on bisphosphonates.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit Oyster Bay Dentists and fill out a contact sheet.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a great solution for patients that are looking to literally “bridge the gap” created by one or more missing teeth. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists use dental bridges to restore smiles, improve talking and chewing ability, and in some cases help improve patient speech. Missing teeth can make it more difficult for patients to produce certain sounds when speaking, and the replacement of those missing teeth can help the patient form those sounds more effectively.

The process of creating a bridge begins by reshaping the anchor teeth (abutments) to which the bridge will be attached. After the anchor teeth are prepared, an impression of the teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab. The lab is able to use the impression to create a model of the teeth as they appear in the patient's mouth. Then a bridge is custom-made to properly fit and feel as close to natural teeth as possible. The bridge consists of crowns that cover the anchor teeth and a pontic (or pontics), which look like and act as the replacement tooth or teeth.

Teeth Whitening

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists see many patients who want to be able to present their brightest and whitest smile.  Many ask the doctors and staff about over the counter products, and have tried them with underwhelming results.  Instead of winging it with retail products, come see us for a consultation and get your own custom whitening system!

During a consultation, your dentist will examine the level of staining on your teeth and be able to tell you what kind of results you can expect from the whitening system. To whiten your teeth at home, you will be fit with custom whitening trays made from molds of your teeth.  For a treatment, apply the whitening gel directly onto the trays and fit them over your teeth.  Your dentist will advise how often you should treat at home and how long each treatment can last.  Following dentist’s instructions, patients have seen this system whiten their smiles 4-8 shades!

Halitosis: Chronic Bad Breath

Halitosis, also known as chronic bad breath, is something that mints, mouthwash, or gum, will not remedy. Unlike morning breath or a strong smell that lingers after a pungent meal, halitosis lingers for weeks, maybe months at a time. Halitosis can result in an anxiety among those affected and may leave you feeling bad about yourself. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists don’t ever want to see that happen and encourage you to schedule an oral exam to assess the condition.

If a daily dental routine of brushing and flossing isn’t reducing the odor in your mouth, you may be a victim of periodontal disease, cavities, and/or dry mouth. If you’re a smoker, tobacco can dry out the mouth leaving you with oral discomfort and bad breath. By drinking plenty of water, and cutting down on caffeine and cigarettes, you’re not only doing your breath a favor, but you’re making a wise decision for your oral health and periodontal health as well. Treatment for halitosis will depend on the cause, but if it’s hindering your self-esteem and leaving you feeling unconfident, please give us a call to get the problem under control.

Laser Treatment for Gums

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists take pride in offering the best technology available to patients, and have seen great results for the treatment of periodontal disease with laser tools. Patients experiencing every stage of gum disease can see improvement from laser treatment.  The laser is so effective in periodontal treatments because it can target unhealthy gum tissue and leave healthy tissue undisturbed. The precision that can be achieved with a laser results in less trauma to the mouth and less recovery time.

In the past, periodontal treatment was completed using more aggressive tools and often required stitches. With a laser, treating only the affected gum tissue and not damaging any healthy gums is more efficient and causes little to no bleeding, which means less swelling after the procedure.  Patients often find the laser procedure relatively painless, so less and sometimes no anesthetic is needed.  Please contact us to improve your oral health with a laser treatment for your gums!

Post-Operative Instructions

Oral surgery is a complex process. First, you anticipate the procedure and fret about getting a tooth extracted, and secondly, you must render up the patience to heal over a course of several days. Whether you’ve recently undergone oral surgery for a tooth extraction or a restorative treatment such as dental implants, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists will give you strict instructions to follow post-operation.

Immediately following surgery, bleeding will continue. To reduce the amount of bleeding and to help stop it completely, damp gauze should be placed over the extraction site. Be sure to replace the gauze after eating soft foods, and never suck through a straw, as you risk the stitches coming undone. Swelling of the jaw is normal because this is the body’s natural reaction to pain. Swelling can be reduced by applying ice, but if it persists for more than seven days, please call our office.

If you have questions or concerns about oral surgery or post-operative instructions, please give us a call. White Spots on Teeth

Everybody wants whiter teeth. But when white spots with a chalky character develop, they’re a warning sign of infection. We of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists don’t want our patients to let tooth decay take them by surprise, which is why this week we’re talking about white spot lesions.

Tooth decay is caused by an infection on the enamel. Bacteria produce acid, which sticks to tartar and plaque. When enamel is eroded by acid, it first takes on a glazed, white appearance as it loses minerals. (This can also be seen in people who suffer from acid reflux.) White spots don’t usually hurt, but if the infection is not stopped, it will create a cavity and remove the protection from the nerve in the tooth.

A white spot can form in as few as thirty days. They are particularly prone to appearing on the upper front teeth at the part where the crown meets the gum line and in the area surrounding orthodontic brackets. Although enamel cannot be regrown, it can be remineralized, so patients should not give up on fighting incipient lesions. We also offer Invisalign as an alternative to fixed braces at our office, which creates less of a risk for white spot development.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

Arthritis can cause problems throughout the body, but patients may be surprised to learn that some kinds of it are highly correlated with gum disease. We of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists often have to provide patients with replacement teeth, so we want everyone to be aware of when they are at risk.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the joints become inflamed because the body is attacking itself. New studies have found that it is extremely common in people with severe periodontal bleeding. While this could be partially explained by arthritis making it difficult for people to perform oral hygiene, periodontal disease often appeared in the very early stages of RA. Upon further investigation, scientists found that gum tissue has similar genetic processes in common with joint tissue, and in the case of autoimmune disorders, they may be affected the same way.

The studies found that oral hygiene is still beneficial for people with RA, even with their additional challenges. Scientists are investigating whether oral care can reduce other RA symptoms, but in the meantime, people with RA are advised to consider electric toothbrushes so they can brush more easily and to use artificial throat moisteners if their salivary glands are compromised.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit Oyster Bay Dentists and fill out a contact sheet.

Medication Use and Oral Health

Most of us are unaware that medications, whether prescribed or over-the-counter will have some sort of impact on oral health. Some medications may cause a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth, oral sores, inflammation of the soft tissues, and/or discoloration. Unfortunately, the side effects of medication are more negative than positive, and The Oyster Bay Family Dentists are here to explain why.

A common side effect of medication in addition to the complications we mentioned above is dry mouth. Saliva keeps food from collecting around the teeth and neutralizes the acids produced by plaque, so when saliva is eliminated due to dry mouth, the chance of developing tooth decay increases. Be sure to discuss the medications you are taking with one of our doctors to avoid complications and discomfort.

If you have questions or concerns about medications the effects they have on oral health, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Common Retainer Methods

If your orthodontic treatment has come to an end, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists would like to wish you congratulations! The orthodontic train doesn’t stop there because now it’s time to protect your hard work with a retainer. There are two types of retainers that are commonly suggested at the end of treatment, and we will explain the difference between the two. During your appointment, we can help you reach a conclusion on which choice is best for you.

  • Removable Retainer – a removable retainer is the most common type, but depending on the individual, it may not always be the best choice. A removable retainer is crafted from a clear plastic that is formed by heat and a model of your teeth.  Removable retainers can be virtually invisible, and easy to wear.

  • Fixed Retainer – also known as a bonded retainer, a fixed retainer consists of a wire being bonded to the back of the six bottom teeth. Bonded retainers tend to protect fewer teeth than removable retainers, but are ideal for the patient that may forget to wear his or her retainer at night.

If you have questions or concerns about retainer options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Tooth Sectioning

We hate for patients to lose their natural teeth, but at the Oyster Bay Family Dentists, we ensure they are extracted safely. Typically, teeth are removed by rocking or them back and forth while pulling or elevating them, but this is sometimes a risk with larger ones, especially wisdom teeth. In those cases, we may section them.

The wisdom teeth are held in place by thick ligaments. Pulling or levering them could require a lot of force and risk damaging the surrounding tissue, which includes major nerves. Additionally, a common reason for wisdom teeth to be removed is that they are trapped below the gum line, and there is not enough room for them to move. When this happens, we use a dental drill to cut the tooth into pieces. The patient is numbed before this happens and the surgical site is kept under a stream of water so the patient’s oral tissues will not be harmed by the drill’s heat. The smaller sections of the tooth can be moved with less force and through smaller openings in the gum pocket. This procedure is safe and common, but we provide nitrous oxide sedation to patients who are worried about undergoing it.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit Oyster Bay Dentists and fill out a contact sheet.

Dangers of Snoring

Are you waking up feeling fatigued after a full night of sleep? Is your partner kicking you in the middle of the night because you’re snoring too loud? Are you the one waking them up just to get some relief? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, it’s important to understand that although occasional snoring is common, habitual snoring can be hazardous to your health. Fortunately, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists have a solution.

Snoring occurs when nasal air passages are obstructed when there is poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, or if a person is overweight. Frequent snoring can be a symptom of a sleep apnea and can put a strain on the heart, cause chronic headaches, or long interruptions of breathing during sleep. If you experience daytime sleepiness or fatigue, give us a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you have questions or concerns about sleep apnea, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Sedation Options

Sedation dentistry is beneficial to patients who don’t want to feel a thing during a dental or an oral surgery procedure. Whether you wish to take the edge off during a cleaning, or are having wisdom teeth removed, or dental implants placed, The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer a sedation option that is right for you. Allow us to explain what types of sedation we offer.

  • Oral Conscious – With oral conscious sedation, the patient remains awake but is left in a heightened state of mind. For this option, you will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.

  • Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous, also known as laughing gas, leaves the patient in a euphoric state feeling completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety will fade away and you will be able to respond to the doctor if need be. Nitrous wears off once the procedure is complete, allowing you to return to your daily activities.

  • Anxiolysis – This light sedative is not as strong as oral sedation but is recommend for those who have mild to moderate anxiety. You will be able to drive yourself home after anxiolysis is administered.

If you have questions or concerns about sedation options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Oral Cancer Awareness Month

As dentists who offer prosthetic teeth and body parts to those suffering from cancer, we are observing Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This disease is treatable if caught in time, but can do incredible amounts of harm. We want our patients to know what they need to watch out for and why it matters.

The most recent statistics indicate that almost 50,000 people in the United States get diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Among people who are newly diagnosed, 40% do not live for more than five years. However, dentists can often find oral cancer before it spreads by searching for red and white spots or lesions in the patients’ mouths. We can also use a specialized light to examine soft materials below the surface of the oral cavity. If something suspicious is found, a sample of the tissue can be sent to a laboratory for diagnosis.

Besides the signs dentists look for, patients should also know to seek help if they experience ringing in their ears, pain on one side of their head, or feel as if there is persistent a lump in their throat they are unable to swallow. Smoking and alcohol use are highly correlated with mouth and throat cancer, and the later can also be caused by HPV.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit Oyster Bay Dentists and fill out a contact sheet.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is primarily used to treat receding gums where tooth has been exposed. When plaque and bacteria build up at the gum line, the gums start to pull away from the teeth and stretch, forming little pockets around the buildup. Even when these little pockets are cleaned out, they remain at the gum line and cause the gums to recede.  The doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists can help you correct this by repairing deficient gums with a gum graft.

A gum graft procedure consists of harvesting healthy tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth and transferring it to the site that needs reinforcement. This gives the deficient gum a replacement, and encourages growth of new material around the graft.  Gum grafting can be performed when receding gums become unsightly, or to cover teeth that have been exposed by receding gums and become much more sensitive.  If you think you could benefit from a gum graft, please contact us.

Bone Grafting For Dental Implants

A bone graft is the term for harvesting bone material from a healthy location and grafting it to a location that is broken or weakened.  The doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists use this method to strengthen jaw bones in preparation for dental implants.

Missing a tooth for an extended period of time can leave the jaw bone vulnerable and compromise its structure.  When a patient needs an implant for a permanent replacement tooth, a bone graft reinforces the jaw bone so it is strong enough to handle the placement of an implant.

In one procedure, bone material is harvested from a healthy location in the patient’s mouth and grafted to the compromised area of the jaw bone.  This strengthens the weakened bone, and encourages growth of new bone material as it heals.  After the procedure, the bone graft will be monitored over the course of months.  When the jaw bone has strengthened enough to handle the placement of an implant, our doctors can move forward with the patient’s plan of care.

Benefits of Veneers

If you have teeth that are gapped, chipped, broken, or fractured, our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists would like to tell you about veneers. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. Veneers are an irreversible process, so it’s important to have all of your questions answered before moving forward. Allow us to explain more about this cosmetic procedure.

Veneers are used to recreate the natural look of teeth while also providing strength and resilience that resembles tooth enamel. The process of veneers takes one or two appointments. During your first visit, our doctors will discuss the new shape and look of what we are going to accomplish by placing the veneers. Afterward, an impression of your teeth will be taken and sent to our laboratory where the veneers will be created. During your second visit, your veneers will be placed and you will be able to show off your new smile.

If you have questions or concerns about veneers, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Wisdom Teeth Removal

Everyone has a set of wisdom teeth, but this set of ‘final molars’ often stays impacted.  Some patients experience these teeth beginning to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 24.  Even when that happens, there is not enough space in the mouth for these wisdom teeth to grow, which is why the Oyster Bay Family Dentists typically recommend extraction.

Keeping wisdom teeth too long can cause oral discomfort and headaches, as well as damage the surrounding teeth and put a patient at risk for infection. If you experience swollen or tender gums around the wisdom teeth, jaw pain, or facial swelling, give us a call. We can determine if you need your wisdom teeth removed, and discuss sedation options and procedure with you.  The procedure will include stitches and some down time, but following instructions, a patient’s recovery shouldn’t take more than a week.

Crown Lengthening

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want every patient to experience their best smile.  Even when patients take great care of their teeth, they may think their gums keep them from their perfect smile.  It is normal for some people to have more gum tissue than others and when it results in a gummy smile, we can correct it by a procedure called crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the surface of the teeth and sculpting the gum line.  Dentists often do this in order to expose more of a tooth and affix a restoration like a crown. We also offer crown lengthening for cosmetics so that any patient can have their perfect smile.  Local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  The procedure only comes with minor discomfort afterwards, and result is a pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile.  Contact us if you think your smile would benefit from crown lengthening!

To learn more about crown lengthening and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Oral Cancer and Alcohol

The prosthodontists of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists provide reconstructive surgery to people who have suffered the ravages of oral cancer. But we also want our patients to know how to avoid this disease in the first place, which is why we strive to provide the latest information.

Recently, the American Society of Clinical Oncology released a study which examined the relationship between cancer and alcohol. They found that alcohol use is the cause of about 5% of new cancer cases, including of oral cancer. This is concerning because most people are aware of the danger posed by smoking and HPV, but are not aware of that of alcohol. The research did not show that the odds of cancer developing differed between different types of alcohol, but it did show that even moderate drinking carries a risk.

Scientists are still debating why alcohol would lead to oral cancer. Some hypothesize that it damages the soft tissues in the mouth, which then have to regrow. But one positive finding of the research was that when people stop drinking, their chances of developing cancer in any part of the aerodigestive tract declines.

Children's Dental Health Month

We of the Oyster Bay Family Dentists treat patients with all kinds of needs, but preventive care is always best. Each February, the American Dental Association devotes a month to educating the public about children’s dental health, and the theme of this year’s campaign is how to use fluoridated toothpaste to protect every part of every tooth surface.

Children’s baby teeth need to be cared for. Although they will eventually fall out, decay is still painful and can cause children to miss sleep and avoid eating and speaking. Parents should start brushing a baby’s teeth as soon as the first one erupts. As children get older, brushing their teeth is a good habit for them to get into as an introduction to taking responsibility for their overall health. It is important for them to remember to brush for two full minutes during each session and to brush every tooth surface and on their tongue.

Fluoridated toothpaste is particularly beneficial because it helps to prevent acid produced by bacteria from eroding tooth enamel. Fluoride treatments available at our office are offered for the same reason. However, fluoridated toothpaste should not be used on mouth guards or other oral appliances because the minerals can leave scratches on plastic.

Drs. Denise VeyVoda and Robert G. West operate The Oyster Bay Family Dentists at 123 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, 11771. To schedule an appointment, call 516-922-5730 or visit Oyster Bay Dentists and fill out a contact sheet.

Endodontics: Root Canal

Most of us know how painful a toothache can be, but when a toothache is the result of dead pulp, a root canal may be necessary. The Oyster Bay Family Dentists understand that the term, “root canal” may sound terrifying, but it’s much more painful to leave with a diseased or damaged tooth. With advances in dental technology, a root canal is very similar to a routine filling and can usually be completed in two appointments.

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the dental pulp inside of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. If this is left untreated, a painful dental abscess may form. A root canal saves the tooth by allowing one of our doctors to remove the inflamed or infected pulp while carefully cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth’s root canal. Once the procedure is complete, the tooth will be placed with a crown to protect it and restore it to its full function.

If you have questions or concerns about root canal treatment, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. Biannual Cleanings

It is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry you have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  The Oyster Bay Family Dentists want patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.

Caring for Invisalign

The Oyster Bay Family Dentists offer Invisalign, the clear aligner system that straightens teeth without the metallic look of braces. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods.  Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove Invisalign each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.  Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic.  If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning the clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment.  Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken.  Invisalign offers its own brand of cleaning solution, and there are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option.  Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner.  It is best to use mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

To learn more about Invisalign and all the services we provide, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.

Nocturnal Bruxism

If you’ve ever noticed yourself clenching your teeth during the night, or during the day, you may be considered a “bruxer.” This is the name for someone who suffers from bruxism, a condition in which a person can habitually grind or clench their teeth. The most common form of bruxism occurs during sleep and The Oyster Bay Family Dentists usually suggest a night guard as a method of treatment. To diagnose this condition, you will need to schedule a consultation.

The action of grinding teeth is dangerous because it can damage tooth enamel, and make teeth more prone to sensitivity. When teeth become sensitive, it may be more difficult to consume hot and cold beverages and to enjoy the foods you love to eat. There are many factors that lead to bruxism, such as stress and anxiety, but this condition can also be brought on by a misaligned bite. To receive a proper diagnosis and treatment, visit us immediately.

If you have questions or concerns about bruxism, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.oysterbaydentists.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at The Oyster Bay Family Dentists in Oyster Bay, NY, call 516-922-5730.
